MacOS9 on A4K CSPPC
« on: December 29, 2006, 06:03:45 PM »
I'm FINALLY installing Mac OS9.0 on a partition under iFusion (1.20) emulation (after owning iFusion for around 2 years, but having no MacOS retail CD to install on it).
Any advice as to what to watch out for?

The docs state that scsi is not supported, yet it is reading my cybppc.device with no problems (both the CD drive and the hard drive onto which I am installing the OS are attached to the CSPPC). The Mac partition is within the first 4 gig of the drive.

I've also got the iFusion 1.2-1.3 update file from aminet, but have not yet installed it (will do so once the OS has installed).

btw - not at that stage yet, but is there any way to get ifusion to start the mac emulation directly from the hard disk, or do I need to boot from the cd each time I start? Would make the whole thing rather tedious and pointless if that is the case.

Thanks

Rich

PS - I'm going for the maximum number of OSes on a single computer: OS3.9, MOS, MacOS9, APUS (eventually)  :lol:
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

SCSI works OK, I had no problems.
Booting works, you just have to change your config to boot from HD instead of CD-Rom.

Thanks zipper - after removing the CD and restarting ifusion it booted form the hard drive.

Have you managed to set up internet access?  I've tried using settings of static IP address, Netmask, gateway and dns server, but (not surprisingly) it isn't this simple.  Do I need ot do some fancy configuration in genesis to allow communication between the emulated environment and the amigaOS, or am I missing something.  The doscs are a little vague (ie no instructions at all, not even a hint).

It was a hell of a shock seeing MS Internet Explorer 4.5 loading up on my Amiga. Felt like apologising to the old girl! :lol:

If you manage to find a way around the network situation you can always get Netscape 7x for Mac, that's less insulting and working quite well. On my real Mac its my preferred browser.

What's the speed of CSPPC you're using?
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

200 MHz

@DJbase
Seriously disappointed that networking is notworking on ifusion.  There seems to be precious little info on ifusion on the whole.  Is the networking issue from your own experience, or do you have some documentation? I'd be interested on reading as much as I can on ifusion if you could point me in the right direction.

can vlink.device not be implemented in some way as (from brief reading of motorollin's previous thread re: routing in genesis) with shapeshifter?

@DJBase

I see, have just done a bit more reading round regarding the Blittersoft/Virtual Programming/Jim Drew fiasco.

What a farce, sorry if this opened up any old wounds for anyone.  Guess I won't be expecting any updates on this piece of software any time soon.

Ah well, frees up a partition for something else I suppose. :-)

Another great chapter in the (relatively) recent history of the Amiga.

a bit off topic,

What is the best MacOS to use with iFusion on a 233mHz PPC 604e A4000?  MacOS 8.5, 8.6, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 9.2.2???

I am in the same boat, bought iFusion when it first came out with high hopes and never installed it.  I took a short break from my Amigas and when I started using them again, still did not install it yet.  I am looking to buy a MacOS install CD and want to make sure I get one that will work.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

I am not sure what the best version is but I would prefer a 9.x version. I am using MacOS 9.1 with iFusion.

I am looking for a copy of OS9.x too. I have a copy of OS8.1 which definitively does not work.

according to the (meagre) documentation 9.1 is the last officially supported version.  You will need the retail version of the install CD, not the version supplied with any specific model.
I believe, but am no expert in the matter, that you can buy 9.0 and download a free update to 9.1, but don't take my word for it (never owned a mac).

Having bought and used Fusion (not the PPC version) I can certainly say that the old $5.00 Mac you passed up at the last yard sale would be more reliable and less frustrating:-D.

I'm not trying to start anything here, I just remember how painfully slow it used to be. Although it did seem to work if you had enough time.

Good Luck,
Jeff

@crunb

looking at a variety of postings from around the time (2001) of the blittersoft takeover there seems to be no port support at all - serial, parallel, ethernet, scsi or any other. Having
said that csppc scsi works...
