Got it!! I moved Scorched.lha into the Workbench drawer and ran LHA from the Shell icon in there, and it extracted!!! As a matter of fact, I'm playing it as we speak!!!

Thanks so much for your help, everyone! Not only can I finally play Scorched Tanks, but I can now find other programs of interest, since I know how to get them from PC to Amiga now! :-D  8-)

Get from Aminet PackMaster to unpack lha archives in a snap (no more typing anymore)

http://aminet.net/util/arc/Packmaster128.lha
(don't forget to setup it : see http://aminet.net/util/arc/Pmasterguide.lha )

For a great game :

I have one more question for you guys: What does one do with ADF files? Is there a program for the Amiga that can open them, similar to LHA for .lha files? I understand that they are disk images, but most I've seen are a tad too large for a 720k floppy.

You can use a program called adf2disk to write them back onto a real amiga floppy. I think most will fit on the floppy if you compress them with lha or zip. You can use winace for files bigger than 720k and split them up and use unace on the amiga.

You can find both unace and adf2disk for free on aminet. You basicly do this on amiga side: adf2disk filename.adf and then insert a empty floppy.

Question about unacing....I moved an .ace archive over to the Amiga, and when i ran unace it said that the archive was compressed with unknown method. Is there a particular way you have to archive the files in Winace on the PC side?

I've never used unace or WinAce so I'm not sure if I can help you with those, but if you want to LHa compress an ADF on the Windows command prompt you can download LHaNT and although you'll still have to type the commands, they are the same commands as the Amiga version uses.  Note: the linked file above is an LHa archive so you'll probably have to unpack it to PC0: on your Amiga.

Actually, that's pretty much what I did, except the Winace program can create LHa archives, so I used it instead of the program you mention. However, I ran into another problem-after unpacking the LHA archive on the Amiga, I tried the adf2disk command given above by Tomas. Everything seemed to go fine, so I then clicked the floppy icon so that I could make sure that the file was indeed on the disk. When I did htis, I got an error that said there was a disk checksum error, and there was nothing on the disk, even after clicking on Show all. I know the floppy i sok, becuase I've been using it all day long. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Nothing ever goes easy for me (can't you tell?  :-D ).

To make a 720K floppy for use on the Amiga w/ CrossDos, do the following.  Take a standard 1.44M floppy and put a piece of tape covering the hole in the upper left side.  Insert the disk into any PC using any version of windoze, and type the following from a command prompt:

format a: /t:80 /n:9

Thats it.  This disk can be read by your Amiga as long as the file "PC0:" is in "system:Devs/dosdrivers/" directory (on the Amiga, of course).
Primary:
A4000T. Phase5 PPC604e-233mhz/060-66mhz. Mediator, Z3 Fastlane, Voodoo5, Delfina, X-Surf, AD516, Peggy Plus.

Collection:
A4000D, A1200, A500, Milan060 (Atari clone), Atari MegaSTE, Atari TT030, C64, C128, Mattel Aquarius, (2) HP Jornada....

Dandy, that typo was clarified a long time ago.

stopthegop, that's not even an issue. I have plenty of blank 720kb disk, so no need to make them from 1.44MB disks.

Hmmm - if the disk is readable on the PC without probs, I'd assume that either the heads of your Amiga floppy drive need to be cleaned or they need a calibration. I have a weak remembrance that there was a tool for this - maybe on Aminet...

Edit:
From time to time I have similar errors in my floppy drive and sometimes it helps to take the disk out of the drive, rotate the inside by a few degrees and retry to read it.

But it might as well be that - given that your disk must be quite a couple of years old - there now is a physical disk error.
In this case you could try to repair it (fix in place) or to salvage it (you'll need a new medium or write to HD) with DiskSalv (from Aminet)...

Oh - one thing I'd like to mention:
Years ago I got myself "CrossDos 7 gold".
With this version there are no 8.3 filename restrictions any longer.
It supports DD disks (720k) as well as HD disks (1440k) and is able to read and write PC harddrives...

The problem is not with the floppy disk, or the floppy drive. I think its another one of those things where I'm just doing something wrong somewhere between the time I compress the adf file into an LHa archive on the PC to the time I try to adf2disk it onto floppy on the Amiga. In fact, everything is just fine until the adf2disk part, because its after that that I get the error and that nothing appears on the floppy.
