Using downloaded software

I'm a little confused about this. Say for example, I download a disk copying utility from Aminet. How can I move the program from my PC to my Amiga? I would imagine you can't do it via floppy, since the two computers use different floppy formats. What other options are there?

look up PC2Amiga, Messydos.  use the search feature on this site as this topic has been discussed thoroughly.

Oh yes, its relatively painless to use a floppy to move files.

On the PC side, format a DD floppy and make sure it formats at 720k, and not the regular 1.4k, and then your amiga can read them.

Make sure that your Amiga has CrossDos setup in order to read the floppy.

And PC0: has to be in your DEVS drawer.

Is CrossDos a seperate program, or is it a part of workbench? If It is part of Workbench, how do I make sure that it is setup on my Amiga?

Which model Ami are you using, and what version of the OS.

The later OS' came withh it. Just read the manual.

I'm using an A500 with Workbecnh 2.4.

WB 2.1 or higher can read 720k formatted dos floppies as it comes included with a nice software piece called crossdos. For wb 1.x you have some freeware called messydos, which basicly does the same thing as crossdos. The only problem with 1.x, is that you first need to transfer it over to you amiga using a pc+software and a null modem cable. If you are going the null modem cable route, then i strongly recommend this software: http://www.amigaforever.com/ae/
AmigaExplorer is also included in the amigaforever package if i recall correctly.

The best way would of course be to have a cdrom or similar.

I believe that the crossdos driver is located on the storage floppy if you have it. You should copy this file to your devs to enable crossdos.

My its been such a long time since I've bothered with 2.4. I don't think CrossDos was included, though I might be wrong, since I never bothered with it when I had it.

Choices: Get your Amiga 500 online and download it directly.

Have someone snail mail you a disk with CrossDos

Buy it from one of the retailers.

Do a direct phone connection Amiga to Amiga and transfer it from someone who's got it.

Upgrade that 500 to 3.0

Buy Amiga Explorer from Cloanto.
Buy the serial cable recommended on their site (Belkin still has them, I just bought one).
Problem solved, with no worries about CrossDOS or a Catweasel, or anything else for that matter.

It should be included in 2.1 and higher. I have honestly not heard of 2.4? did you mean 2.04? if so, then it is indeed sadly not included.

Then your only options is to either get someone to give you a floppy with messydos or similar or going the null modem cable way + something like amiga explorer.
Or buying a new set of wb 2.1 or higher.
