Hi BGary, quite an adventure, huh?  :-D

Ok, lets see, ok, you have the Scorched.LHA file on your 720k floppy. Copy it to your HD.

Take a look in your C: drawer, and there should be a program called LHA, which is what you use to unpack, if not, you have to download it from Aminet, or there should be a copy in that pile of disks you got. Copy it to the C: drawer.

Go into WB and look for the Shell program, which brings up a command line.

Bring up Scorched.LHA wherever you have it on your HD.

Type lha -x scorched.lha dh1:{name of the drawer you've got for this} and that should unpack the entire thing to the drawer.

If there was a problem in downloading the scorched file, it might be missing stuff.

Hope that works. Scorched is a pretty cool game.

I enter the command line you provided and it keeps telling me that it cannot open the archive. One thing that got my attention is that the archive is called SCORCH`1.LHA, which tells me that either the filename was truncated, or there's something wrong with the flopppy. Someone told me earlier in this thread that problems often arise when you try to format the floppy on the PC side. He said to format it on the Amiga side, then put the program on it on the PC side. Two questions: do you think that has anyhting to do with the problem, and how do you format the floppy on the Amiga side so that the PC will read it?

I'm not sure if the messydos or other PC disk reading software you're using (crossdos) likes truncated names ... someting like schorche~1.lha ... Just for trying, rename the file on the PC and be sure that the base name (without the extension) is at maximum 8 charaters...

Then if possible, and the Amiga, copy it from drive to the HD or RAM and decompress it from there (I hav the impression that lha'ing from pc0: sometimes makes it wrong ... i know it doesn't makes much sense, but I make this faded memory ... maybe just a glitch ;) )

for formating the disk on the Amiga, i think you can do a format PC0: or on the workbench, select the drive (PC0: ?) and from the Icons menu, Format disk.

one more thing : if you format the disk on the PC as 720KB using a 1.44MB high density (are there still 720KB for sale ?!) be sure to cover the hole on the disk on the opposite side of the write-protection switch... Low density disks don't have that hole and the PC drive distinguises one from the other type by it.

That is wrong.

When making instructions to newcomers, at least make sure your instructions are correct. Thank you.

The correct command is:
Code: [Select]
lha x scorched.lha dh1:foo/bar/bleh/
...where 'x' means extract, and dh1:foo/bar/bleh is the drawer to extract to. The last / is mandatory.

Yes... just copy PC0: to your SYS:Devs drawer, double-click the PC0: icon or reboot. Format the disk on the Amiga side (selecting the appropriate option, it'll be obvious when you see it) and you're all set.

probably you'll need crossdos handler in L: too, if crossdos is not installed it won't be there.

check if there is an install icon on the crossdos disk for a proper install. remember not to use novice install (especially if you're a novice)

edit : oh sorry i didn't read the second page and see that he solved the crossdos problem.

Whoops, pardon my typo.

If you want the list of LHA commands, just type LHA in the shell, then you won't fall for my mistakes.

I just can't get this to work. I'm sure that its probably jsut something I'm doing wrong, I can't just figure out what it is that I'm doing wrong.

Question:Is it possible to transfer files to the Amiga using a parallel conneciton? I know it can be done with a serial connection, but unfortunately I odn't think I have any serial cables at the moment (go figure-I had more than I knew what do do with a month or so ago! :-D ). And if it is possible, how is it done?

I've found that the parallel method is doable...however you need a program called PCtoAmiga. Anyone know how I can get my hands on this? I've searched Aminet repeatedly and can't find it there, though I was told it was there. :-?

Scrapping the parallel method for the moment. I've finally gotten my Scorched Tanks program over to the Amiga via floppy. Took it form the floppy and put it in my hard drive. Looked in the Scorched Tanks drawer, everything looks ok. click on th executible, and the screen flashes and a dialog box comes up saying "can't open your tool Scorched 1.85". Anyone know what the problem is now? This is getting annoying! :-D

I tried that, but it still gave me the same message. Instead of bringing the lha file over, I've tried another method-opening the lha on the PC and putting the contents on the floppy instead of the entire lha archive. This method seems to work, except that once I move the files from the floppy to my HD on the Amiga, I click on the executable and it gives me a mesaage saying "your tool Scorched1.85 could not be opened". Anyone know what the problem is now?

Why not just burn to a CD and give CrossDos the finger?

You do have a CDROM on the Amiga, right?
