Can anyone explain the difference between a 1942 and a 1960 monitor please ?

The 1942 is a 1084 D1/D2 style monitor that does RGB as well as VGA and has built in speakers, stereo I believe?  The 1960 is a different type that does not have any speakers built in and does all modes and VGA as well.  It also needs the silver RGB to VGA adaptor to use it with anything other than the A3000.  Both monitors work with all Amigas.

Another important note is that the 1960 is true multisync (any screenmode) whereas the 1942 is bisync (15KHz and 31KHz modes only, nothing in between) which means it can't use Super72.

  That's not ENTIRELY true.  I used a 1942 for years with Super72, however you need to use a tool like "moned" to hack the monitor file.  You can also find some "pre-hacked" Super72 monitor files on Aminet for the 1942.  In fact, I remember I was using a resolution LARGER than 800x600 (don't remember exactly the size).  Looking back, I can't imagine how I managed to use that without having a seizure :crazy: ... expect terrible flickering despite it not being an interlaced screenmode.

Granted (I did the same thing for a while :-)), but I was always worried the tube would blow out since the monitor took about 5 seconds to actually lock on to the signal.

Well, it depends. The 1942 is a better cosmetic match to the 600, 1200, and 4000, and the 1960 is a better cosmetic match to the 3000 (if you care about such things. Plus the 1942 has speakers. So it boils down to:

-Do you care about Super72?
-Do you care about the physical appearance of your monitor?
-Do you care about built-in speakers?

One other note is that the 1960 had a large run of poorly soldered boards (cold solders) and failed prematurly if not fixed right away after buying it. Its an easy fix you just need a soldering gun and a steady hand. You need to open it up and resolder (just reheat them no new solder needed) the points around the gun at the back of the monitor particularly the larger points.
Both the 1942 and 1960 are hard to find so if you do know of where to get them you should post the location as I know of lots of A.O. members who would love to know.
Personaly I think its better to just use a nicer and larger PC monitor with a scandoubler/flicker fixer instead, alot less hasle.

I am using a 1942 right now, with Super 72's 800/600 mode with no trouble at all. Flicker really isn't an issue. I did have to tweak the daylights out of the driver with moned however. Knock on wood, this setup has been working for over 9 years! (this is on a 1200 system too)

Don't let the speakers sway you! These tiny speakers must have all of .5 watt per side! Get better speakers!

1960 is a better cosmetic match to the 3000

how do you figure that?  It is off white just like the 600/1200/4000, if used with a 3000 it would look wrong as the 3000 is beige.

Well I guess so - it is always better to look at something that is not gruesome, but I think both monitors in this this instance are quite nice.

-Do you care about built-in speakers?

A nice feature but they probably would not give a decent enough sound.  I am quite happy to use external speakers regardless of whether the monitor has them in-built.

The only reason I have my 1942, is because it's the only Amiga monitor that I have. That and I need it for the AGA part of my stuff. I actually think that that monitor came with my Pluto System (RIP Pluto as and actual planet. We will miss you)
