I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that it could be that Vista is now using vector graphics.

That window has only happened with Sygate.  Absolutely nothing else so it's maybe the way that Sygate draws it's windows on the screen that's the problem.

So you're saying Vista is only capable of drawing vector windows? I can't believe that - what about when you open an image file, that's not a vector isn't it. I'm sure if they really tried hard, Microsoft could allow Vista to render a bitmap object in its vector environment.

Sounds like there's still going to be a lot of need for customisation of this product to bring it closer to my usage preferences.  Anytime I install any version of windows, there is just so much fiddling to turn off pretty silly features, and make the system behave in a productive fashion.

As far as security goes, well, lets just wait and see.
Good good study, day day up!

I agree. At least Amiga Workbench, which can be heavily customised, functions nicely without needing to be tweaked. The only OS I have ever used out of the box, with zero customisation (except the background...) is MacOS, which is as close to perfect as I can imagine.

Yep, we'll hear all about the security holes in the news

Hum
i for one will try to delay purchasing Vista until they bring out the Vista SP1  patch, that will include all the things they will have left out in the finished release.
Security wise, Vista will be better than XP, but for now i am using third party  software (and vista stuff) to `upgrade` XP  to looook like Vista, but  yet be more compatible and bug free and less resource hunger.

Okay, strange things afoot in Opera when User Account Control is on.

It's not allowing me to save changes to the bookmarks:

Could not save hotlist file.
File exists

C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opera6.adr

Try again?

Feck knows why.

I have full access to the folders now, yet Opera can't overwrite what's already there.  And even if I delete the file it still can't save the bloody file.

Still can't figure out that problem, so I've switched off the UAC again.

It's far too restricting to really be of any use.  It's a nice idea, and it would generally be ok... But when you're trying to go into things like the Windows, Documents & Settings (even on another HD that has an independent install on it) and others and it won't let you it's a bit off putting to say the least.  You've then got to change the access restrictions on the folder and subfolders (you can actually change them when the warning about the restriction opens).  For each user.

And I'm *meant* to actually *be* an administrator!

If the default restrictions weren't so bloody high it'd be great.  But as it stands this setting should only be for the guests or non-admin level users.

Anyways... enough ranting about that, onto Opera my point in this post.

You can't install the Netscape WMP plugin for Opera.  The installer plugin doesn't recognise WMP11.

The files in question don't come with WMP11 either, so you'll have to get the necessary files elsewhere.

The files in question are:

npds.zip
npdsplay.dll
npwmsdrm.dll

Once you have these files, just copy them into:

C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player

and

C:\Program Files\Opera\program\plugins

and then restart Opera and that's it.

Oh, it was tested with Opera 8.54 (build 7730) and WMP 11.0.5384.6167 (god m$ love combining their version/build numbers don't they).  I can't see why this won't work with other 8.x and 9.x versions of Opera - or earlier if the files/installation is the same.

My brother in law installed it last night.

First thing he said was....

"Doesn't work with AOL".. ie: wont access their environment, so he cant get his emails or accessthe chatrooms... The Chatrooms are the ONLY reason he is on AOL.

Can't say I feel sorry for him.  AOL?  Deserves what he gets really ;-)

My modem didn't even need installed (Motorola SURFboard SB5100) and the Blueyonder (Telewest) CD didn't need to be installed either.

It was just plug 'n' play for once! :-D

We just got a router this afternoon (D-Link DI-524) but I've yet to see if it works under Vista.  Maybe tomorrow...

I have tried the new office.
What the problem is from my point of view is that they are trying to change the user interface.
What for?
Outlook most of the people i know are confidence with.
Why change?
Because of work i use windows on a daily basis(XP&2000)
Home Ubuntu and the Amigas.
Don't see the advantages for this so called upgrade, the people who work with the software have to learn to write for more independable use.
The reason many(a Lot) use windows is not because of the OS, but because the software you need is only for that OS.
That is sad.
An upgrade that takes more HD space and requires new and better hardware is a downgrade in my opinion.
Sorry for the rant, but Now XP is finally running OK at work and i want to keep it that way.

A lot of people are complaining about user account control. In my experience it's best to turn it off when you are installing stuff., but leave it on during normal machine operation. But when it's on nothing can touch your system. It's saved my butt from a number of spyware programs and even one worm.

Yes it's annoying but that same request for admin priviledges comes up on the latest MacOS (maybe not as often) if you try to install or make machine changes.

If you look for the SECURITY center shield symbol by any option you click on you can expect those annoying dialogs to pop up. A good rule of thumb is just to know that permission will be granted if you see the shield on any buttons or dialogs.

There used to be another way to turn off user account control the method was:

Toggle User Account Control (On/Off)

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click “System and Maintenance”
Scroll down and click “Administrative Tools”.
Double click on “System Configuration”.
If prompted to launch the System Configuration Utility, click “Continue”.
In the System Configuration window, click on the “Tools” tab.
Select either “Disable UAP” or “Enable UAP” from the list and click Launch.
You will need to restart the computer for this to take effect.

I am not sure that exists in this build or not..

Is this man is married to your sister? Or is his sister your wife?

Either way, if he was my brother-in-law he wouldn't be for much longer! ;-)

Sounds extremely irritating. Why do you have to click through all those dialogues and make all those decisions just to see an error from the app? Why can't it just appear, like every other decent OS on the planet?

Just found out something interesting (but I've yet to try it myself).

According to here there's a problem with Quicktime and the Aero interface.  (Scroll down to the list and look for Apple iTunes...)

I'm wondering if it's the same for Sygate's error message.  Although I've not had any problems with Quicktime and Aero like Paul Thurrott has.

I'll be trying Sygate without Aero sometime soon, hopefully turning off Aero solves the display problem.

The thing that bothers me more about this whole thing is that most things presented as inovation in M$ products, including windows, are just a copy of other's ideas, yet you get everyone drolling at their marketing {bleep} as if they were producing something brought up in a timemachine from the future.... Insane. :madashell:

That's exactly the reason I stay well clear of clips from any of their presentations.

I absolutely cannot stand the asslicking going on in them.

You know, I've been using XP all day and I'm *still* looking for the arrows in the address bar to change location in the shell.

I hope someone out there makes a hack for XP to allow that.

I haven't even booted up Vista since Monday I think!  I never realised I was so used to that already.

Hum,
open `folders options` in control panel and customise to taste once your target window is open.

or use a `vista skin` for windowblinds....
