Hum,
open `folders options` in control panel and customise to taste once your target window is open.

or use a `vista skin` for windowblinds....

Hmmm, none of the Vista skins I've seen actually change the address bar.

This address bar is what I'm looking for (complete with arrows), this is the closest I've seen.

The address bar still functions like XP and not Vista.

I don't care if the toolbar looks like Vista or not (I personally like the TriAX skin anyway), as long as the functionality of the Vista address bar is there.

Hum,
you tried the transformation pack (V3)?

Notice the small `history` arrow buttons

Also
"One thing that each new beta of Vista has proven well to do, is become more system intensive than the last. The Aero Glass feature alone can be responsible for eating up over 100MB of ram. The OS in general is quite bulky, especially the Ultimate, which makes people wonder how they are supposed to run it at release. After a fresh WinXP install, you can usually expect near 30 processes to be running, but in Vista, that number skyrockets to 40+. Not only are there more processes though, but each one takes a significant amount of ram."

Not those arrows, the arrows within the address bar itself...

Computer > Windows > System

Those arrows.  Quick access to the relevant folder.

XP SP2 + last patches ("SP3") : a good one to work at home.

Windows, with Vista, seems to be very interesting for professional audio applications, even for Mac addicts...A lot of drivers and (finally) a stable operating system without high latencies and blue screens during audio sessions. And if you're not happy why not to go to audiolabs.it ;=)

Has anyone been able to install AVG Anti-virus on Vista?

I see Grisoft is advertising AVG 7.xxx as compatible with VISTA and XP 64, (I successfully installed it on XP 64), but VISTA beta 2 (64 bit) stops the installation with a compatibilty error message.

My thoughts on Vista overall  (intitial):

I'll give AVG a try over the weekend.

For the first time last night I got a BSOD in Vista.  It might've been caused by Java, Azureus or a USB 16 in one reader.

But in all honesty I think it's because Siouxsie walked into the room just before it happened

That use to happen a hell of a lot a few years ago.

So far the only one that worked for me is CA eTrust EZ Antivirus. Most others either don't install or only work partly or make services hang.

Hum,
First Update for Windows Vista Beta 2 and Windows Codename Longhorn Server Beta 2 (KB919946)

Install this update to fix an issue where in the presence of Internet Protocol security (IPsec) or Windows Firewall, a race condition can be hit on multi-processor (or hyper-threaded) systems causing memory corruption, leading to a system crash.

Hum,
Grisoft, the maker of the popular free antivirus software AVG has announced that Microsoft has fixed a bug that was preventing AVG from installing on Vista Beta 2. You need to get an update though.

Peter Cameron of Grisoft's Australian distributor Avalanche Technology said Vista Beta 2 users should obtain the Microsoft patch via Windows Update.

Great news that.  It'd be a shame if AVG was never on Vista.

I haven't had time to check Vista since before my last post in this thread :-(

Vista stable and secure?

Hum,
perhaps you should leave it a while,

Some of Microsoft's efforts to make Windows Vista its most stable and secure operating system ever could cause instability and new security flaws, according to a Symantec report.

Researchers at Cupertino, California-based Symantec examined the new networking technology in recent test releases of Vista, Microsoft's next major operating system release. They found several security bugs and determined that Vista's networking technology will be less stable, at least in the short run, than Windows XP's.

"Microsoft has removed a large body of tried and tested code and replaced it with freshly written code, complete with new corner cases and defects. This may provide for a more stable networking stack in the long term, but stability will suffer in the short term."

Also, do file requesters finally allow you to define your own favorite folders?  I find it odd that MagicRequester on the Amiga allowed me to do this, but Windows still doesn't.

This has been possible for a long time.

Download the Tweak UI powertoy from Microsoft and there you can define your custom places bar.

Have you tried double clicking on the bar inside of it? you will notice you can still type or paste a path into it.. also if you are missing classic menus hit the alt key (make sure the application has focus with your mouse).

Oh yes, the double click to get the standard addy bar is great.  I discovered that pretty quick.

I don't remember getting the classic menus though.  That's a nice touch.
