AROS apparently is 'usable' on x86, you can't do that much with it yet, though the odd program here and there do get ported, I think there was a news story the other day about a new version of an art prog called Lunapaint.
Linux, as much as I really want to like it, it's the clunkiest, most elephantine OS I've ever seen. I've tried a few distros, none were particularly good, I have Ubuntu 5.10 installed at the moment and it's making my hair fall out (faster). The Unix based OS will not take off for the average user until they make it possible to install and configure _everything_ with the ease and simplicity present on other OSes like MacOS, AmigaOS or even the dreaded Windows, specifically I never want to see another terminal in my life. The idea of the GPL alone isn't enough to make me love Linux.
Oh and anthropomorphic cats are great, but what's an anamorphic cat? Is it stretched to fit on widescreen TVs or something? (j/k)
