Yeah, I am a dreamer. I am dream that we all could build our own system, complete with OS. Let's say 5,000 machines were, build, we would all meet and hang out. Sure, I know.

OS 4 is just around the corner, but I was thinking, are there people in this forum that would be capable of building an operating system? We could select some hardware or use existing and then take it from there.

Why not support AROS?  It's open source, and already runs on commodity hardware.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Adolescent: Is AROS based on Linux? If so, I was thinking about an OS that was build from scratch.

Anyone know how many hours was put in creating the OS for the Commodore 64? Just wondering.

AROS has been self-hosting for a while now, but can also run as a userland process in Linux.

Agreed.  Build on something thats already out there, and a long way to completion.  Something pure Amiga.

You can find the latest Aros-Max snapshot at;

Have fun

But, but, but, Aros-MAX, I thought that was an extension to Windows???

Is it hard to program an OS to run on specific hardware? Again, like my question about the C64, anyone know how long it took to create the Kickstart ROM and Workbench?

That can happen if you don't check!!!

No. But then again it takes years. It's not like you can just get 10 people from some forum and get the os ready in two weeks.

10 years is somewhat realistic timeframe for a hobby project to get somewhat usable as OS of it's own. Less if you can recruit lot of skilled people behind it. A lot more if just ignore any previous work (such as linux or bsd, or amigaos) and want everything your own, designed from bottom up.

Another problem is lack of applications, that can kill any otherwise nice project.

Anyway, sorry I'm already occupied with "OS of my own". ;-)

I did not get that one???

Yeah, there is a problem with the applications.

I am so frustrated with the operating systems there are available. AROS seems quite cool, and I will probably end up using it.

Lately I have been thinking about building an OS. Not myself, unless it can be done in BASIC. *LOL*
Something with a PCI card with the 'kernel' or what ever it is called stored on a ROM. A simple OS, easy to use and super fast.

Okay, what ever.

@ricco32097

I'm not trying to shoot you down here, but the OS has to come from somewhere.

Piru: Yeah, but with limited support to hardware, no need for developing thousands driver, it should be somewhat possible. Then again, I know nothing about programming. I just believe that there is something wrong with the way OS' are running these days when I compare my current system to my old Workbench on a 12 MHz system.

The original Amiga OS didn't take 10 years to complete. But, it wasn't a hobby project. Those guys were getting paid and did pretty much nothing else but be in that building and work.

So, that brings up a new question. Without regard to there being no apps, how long would a modern OS take to make if you had a guy with millions of bux and a group of motivated people working 20 hours a day?

I just want aros to mature so i can use it on my x86 hardware,  aros has alot going for it, windows is crappy and linux is too unixy its not desktop OS calibre, however AROS is perfect for the hoem user which is why we should all do what we can to help.

Only problem i have with AROS is the anamorphic cat used in the logo, i can rise above that tho :)

AROS apparently is 'usable' on x86, you can't do that much with it yet, though the odd program here and there do get ported, I think there was a news story the other day about a new version of an art prog called Lunapaint.

Linux, as much as I really want to like it, it's the clunkiest, most elephantine OS I've ever seen. I've tried a few distros, none were particularly good, I have Ubuntu 5.10 installed at the moment and it's making my hair fall out (faster). The Unix based OS will not take off for the average user until they make it possible to install and configure _everything_ with the ease and simplicity present on other OSes like MacOS, AmigaOS or even the dreaded Windows, specifically I never want to see another terminal in my life. The idea of the GPL alone isn't enough to make me love Linux.

Oh and anthropomorphic cats are great, but what's an anamorphic cat? Is it stretched to fit on widescreen TVs or something? (j/k)
