What is the best thing to happen to the amiga?
« on: February 15, 2006, 03:35:16 AM »
In your opinion, what is the best thing to happen to the Amiga? Thought this might make a nice topic with all the negative posts around. :-)

I think it's the fact that people have worked so hard to keep the Amiga alive and I see it as a sign of how much this computer platform means to some people in the fact that so many people keep coming back to it.  Me being one of them.  :)

Do I still have my PC?  Yes.  For many reasons, one being I support PC's for a living and have to keep up with them.  But I've had so much fun since I started using Amiga again and using the Amiga Forever software.

So I guess the best thing to happen to the Amiga is the people that use it.  Otherwise it would be dead already.

Oh and I include those people that are continuing the work on the OS and the hardware.  Keep up the good work!
Amiga - The fun computer!

Amiga 500 - 3MB, A590, 250MB HD, SupraTurbo28.
Amiga 1200HD - 32MB, 4GB CF-Card, GVP 68030-40Mhz.
Amiga 600HD

The best is yet to happen, the eventual official fall of Amiga, then many people can get on with their lives...

Well, since the release of the first A1000, I think the best thing to happen to any kind of computer is cheap harddrives. They're sooo much better than floppies...

It has to be Kickstart / Workbench 2.0 - finally, we were freed from the orange and blue hell that was Workbench 1.3!  :-D

I think there should be a really powerful desktop amiga.

Like the A1200, but built in PPC etc.

And it would have to have all sorts of new custom chips to take it to about year 2012 when it currently 2006.

The best thing that COULD happen to the amiga would, as recent dave haynie article (iirc) suggested, to free it from proprietary hardware dependency.
Even if they sold the OS with a hardware key, such as a set of roms or a write-protected fpga-key on a PCI card, so the OS couldn't just be copied - I'd be happy to buy OS4 for £100 for a single installation - as long as I knew I could buy a PPC motherboard and upgrade the CPU whenever I wanted/could afford (drivers allowing).

With respect to the Amy 05 guys - I really look forward to your board, and WILL be buying it (assuming OS4 runs on, and comes with it): if you an guarantee a price and that it will be released I'll pay you £200 upfront RIGHT NOW!!!! But it is still tieing the user ot a fixed, soldered in cpu with no upgrade options, and a 33MHz PCI bus speed.

In terms of the current situation: (politics aside) mediator has to be the best thing to happen to the amiga purely because it gives me:
a 16mb graphics card £5
a soundcard for £5
and a ethernet card £0.50
- all of which I can replace for around a tenner should any or all of them die on me.  Given the same situation with a zorro bus, you're looking at a couple of hundred squids on green-board alone, for lower spec stuff.

Second to that poseidon (Thanks Chris Hodges), as it gives me masses of new hardware ot play with at a reasonably good data transfer speed.  I use spider - it may be WAY overpriced at £50, but for future applications I think the PCI bus is the way to go, not limiting oneself by having to route data through the (15-year old) motherboard.
I don't like the way they deal with their critics, but I do think Elbox have the right approach when it comes to developing hardware for the classic amiga.
They really should give developer information though to allow other people to develop drivers for the mediator.  That sucks: really Elbox - that really, really sucks.  Oh, and you're installation programs also suck.
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

The best thing to happen to the Amiga: The hundreds (if not thousands) of dedicated programmers who put in all that time and energy to make all the amazing software available - especially the mass of freely available software.

I put my Amiga in my closet in 1991 because I had no software. It would still be in the closet if I didn't find the unbelievable amount of software on Fish disks, then Aminet. My Amiga has had a complete resurrection - something I would have never thought possible.

For me it has to be Rom's 3.1 with OS3.9, and the Mediator SX.
This has given me a great deal of pleasure compared to any PC that I have built and run.
I simply cant aford OS4.0, so at the moment as my 1200T mobo has gone and died on me I am having to use Amikt V1.04 via an Athlone with Win XP.
So at least I am still running an Amiga, and my 1200T when it was alive was far bettter to use than my Athlon PC.
So is AmiKit.

Rom's 3.1
OS3.9
Mediator
And a good enough Tower case.

Mike.
Amiga 1200, 82gb HD, 4 way IDE\'97, DVD Multi-Recorder, OS3.9, BB1,BB2, Apollo Turbo MkII 030/40, 32meg Fastram, 4Gb CF card PCMCIA slot, IDE CF card adaptor 4Gb CF card, HP 810C, Alba HDTV, Converted PC PSU. Best thing that happened to Amiga in its recent history has got to be the PCI busboards, with the Mediator being on top.

060 accelerators and tower cases are also amongst my top picks. :-D
