The creative atmosphere around it, creating sub-cultures such as the demoscene. It really is a machine whitout laws.
Money is just paper but good demos last forever.

The best thing that happened to the Amiga? Commodore.. Otherwise, we would all be using Ataris today.. :-)

It gave people a powerful computer at good price.  Just look at what people in business use to spend on 1 PC in late 80's/early 90's and look diffrance for the price nothing touched Amiga not even Atari ST systems.

The best thing to happen to the Amiga? Future tense?

Some company picks up the funding of UAE, by going commercial,  compatibility and stability reaches an all time high, the core is optimised for hand held devices such as mobile phones etc. and classic Amiga games begin proliferating everywhere. What's more they slap the logo on everything!

The best thing to happen to the Amiga, past tense? I guess it would have to be the A500. Without whom the Amiga would have rotted away as an overpriced, underpowered workstation.

Amithlon and UAE.

For giving people like myself a chance to escape crappy slow expensive hardware and run AOS on cheap, fast, available hardware.

So they both cant run OS4, no big loss.

Yes! And who would have thought that M$ would have ripped it off over a decade later for XP? (or Xtra Problems as I call it)  ;-)

@Savan

So you've not used OS4 on an A1 then...

Slow and Expensive would be A1200 with BlizzardPPC / BVision.

Raw Clock speed is no measure !

Slow and expensive includes the Amigaone, unless nearly 600 quid for a motherboard with out-of-date specs is your idea of cheap.

Yes i have and it was very fast, but it does not matter how fast it runs, when the hardware cost so damn much just for the privilege.

for me it's the excellent and low cost BPPC 060+SCSI with a GREX solution that bring me the best of what an Amiga can give, with very high compatibity from old apps and old games Kick/WB 1.3 up to MorphOS, and may be OS4 if there is a trick to use the Voodoo 3 or the Permedia 2 that I have on it  :-D
Keep the Faith !
VG 5000/A1000/500/500+/600/2000/CDTV/1200PPC-GREX/1200PPC -ATEO-BV/4060D/CD32/Aone/Peg 1/Peg2 G4/ various funny machines too  :-) http://www.mo5.com/collection/index.php?pseudo=CLS2086
I also repair drives of our old beloved Amiga

The best thing to happen to the Amiga is freeing it from custom hardware (as the AmigaOne has done). I'd like to have all the money I've spent on custom Amiga hardware since I first got my Amiga 1000 back in the '80's. Recently I paid $160 for a crappy little scan-doubler box for my classic Amigas that doesn't even work very well. People whine about losing the custom chips. A new custom chip-set would have to do something more than the zillions of PCI video cards out there. It makes you wonder what that would be and why bother?

I will admit to having never seen a Blizzard in action, but just going on the generation and clock (!) difference between a 603e at ~100MHz and a G3 at 800MHz.

An A1 is expensive, but I wouldnt say slow - it just has lower numbers compared to PC hardware (I'll stick up for meself here by saying that comparing a BPPC and A1 is one thing, but compareing x86 and PPC is quite another)
besides, I didnt factor in the price. If I wanted cheap, I coulda had a Windo$e lap warmer for that price.

and isnt the BPPC the same only more so (re out of date specs, etc).

true, you make a good point, but what else was I gonna run it on, when I didnt want 2nd hand hardware ? I'm afraid I must reiterate the hoary old argument that numbers count, and if Eyetech had been able to run batches of 10k or even 100k the board would have been a lot cheaper. still, not bad for an experimental board!

I finally just got round to installing update 4 - I managed to copy the contents of the install iso image using MountISO - and installed onto the partition recently vacated by update 2. not played so far, but it looks very good - way better than update 3.

I might even venture that Hyperion are one of the better things to happen to Amiga, countering that with The various owners being some of the worst.
