How the heck do you network xp to 2000???
« on: February 04, 2006, 04:44:34 PM »
Hi
ok i have ethernet cards in both machines and im trying to get just a standard connection for the 2000 machine to have access to the internet from the xp pc....How do i do this?the xp box says the network cable is plugged in but the ip address is invalid. How do you add the ip address in 2000?I cant find it anywhere and it also says the cable is unplugged on 2000.
Any help would be really great,thanks..

Hi -

Well, I think the easiest way to share files is using AmigaExplorer and a nulmodem serial port connection.  Amiga Explorer come with Claonto's Amiga Forever Amiga emulator package.

The more challenging way is what you have in-mind.  Have you already configured the TCP/IP stack on your Amiga2000 to directly access the internet using Miami or Genesis?  Or are you just daisy chaining the Amiga 2000 to your PC
and then the PC to your cable modem/router?

No matter, you should check out the website
http://samba/amigaworld.net/
That shows how to get things connected and use the program SAMBA to connect-up and network your machines.

I've heard that Samba is hard to configure hence the title of the webpage Welcome to Amiga Samba for Idiots.

Good luck.  This should be a fun project.  I so far mostly sneaker net burning CDs or swapping PC format ZIP disks.

Oh no no you got me wrong here, sorry i should of made it more clear lol.I`m wannting to network windows xp to windows 2000,not to share files just so the other can use the same internet connection...
See my younger brother has a pc aswell so i was just trying to get the modem shared between the two pcs like i have done with my amiga. So my xp machine says it is aquiring the network address and the win 2000 says the cable is unplugged..so anyone know why or what to do?Genesis was a lot easier than this....

Am I correct in thinking you had previously been sharing the WinXP PC's connection with your Amiga, but now you have swapped the Amiga for a Win2k PC?  The XP box, with the modem connected to it, should act as a router, and the 2000 box should be set to obtain its IP address automatically.  Can you give some details about what settings you've made with the software?

I'm not sure about the 'cable unplugged' error.  It's the same cable you used successfully before, right?  Is it a crossover cable?
Good good study, day day up!

To change settings of the Windows 2000 NIC, go to Settings -> Network and Dial-up Connections -> Local Area connection x -> Properties -> Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties. It might be best to use a static address here as your XP box probably isn't a DHCP server.

Yes  thats right i had my amiga connected to my xp box but now i`m trying to connect a 2000 windows machine to my xp.
Well yeah it`s a cross over cable but not the same one but i know it works because i use it between two xbox consoles.
Well really i havent done much to the settings because i couldnt figure out where to input an ip adress or whatever.
