ok so is this correct?
On the xp box here are my settings...

ip address 192.168.0.1
subnet mask 255 255 255.0
gateway 192.168.0.2

windows2000

ip 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

I don't think the gateway addresses are set up correctly.  The xp box, with the modem attached, will act as the gateway for the 2000 box, but not the other way around.  I believe the gateway for the xp box is the server which it connects to at your isp.  You wouldn't normally have to set this manually.

I think in xp, you can right click on the icon for your network connection, select properties, and then advanced, and check the appropriate boxes for internet connection sharing.  I think if you have the addresses set correctly in your 2000 box, then it should be able to access the internet through the xp box, using it as a gateway.  I'm not sure if you have to tell it specifically to do this.  I've never made this kind of set up myself, as I use a h/w router.

Have you looked at a web page like this yet?

Good luck.
Good good study, day day up!

I`m sure the gateway should be the same on both machine`s.

To share the internet on both machines you need a proxy sever,do a search using google for a `proxy sever software`, I know its out there i had on my XP network but cant remember its name.
I remember that it was a nice bit of software ,install it and your done !
as we say in brum \\"yow allright mate\\"

I also recommend using the autoconfig options.  It seems you have already tried this, but maybe you made some innapropriate choices along the way.  I also recommend reading some more tutorials about it online.

The XP box will most likely be assigned an IP address automatically from your ISP.  Your 2000 box should also be able to get its IP address from your xp box.  I haven't done this before, but I think you should be able to find out how, if you look around.  o/w, maybe try a windows support forum.

Good luck.
