3640 cpu board with 25Mhz 040
« on: December 17, 2005, 09:41:42 PM »
Ok, as I am not very hardware knolagable this may see like a dumb question.

Can a person with the stock 040 25mhz 3640 board replace the Motorola chip with a faster one like the 060 50mhz or is there other factors that make this impossible?

No you can't.  I did overclock this board to 33Mhz back in the day but it got very HOT and would lock up my A4000 so this is not recommended.  I would just bite the bullet and get a faster board like a Cyberstorm MKII/III or GVP 4060.

Why not the Cyberstorm MK1? It's faster than the MKII anyway...

Well for one, it is harder to find, bulkier and more problematic.  It is a beast, might as well get the smaller, streamlined ones I mentioned.  But hey if you can get a MK1 for a song then why not!  But I doubt it.

A.A.M.O.F. I got one in my A4000D.
A genuine CyberStorm MK-I !!! With 128MB onboard,
and it's not problematic at all! Runs like a charm!

Not AFAIK.  And in space crammed systems like the A3000/4000 you don't want one in it!  Thats all I know.  Might work well but if you are going to get a 060 card get a MKII/III or GVP IMHO...

The CS MK-I works fine in my A4000D. I never had any
problems. And yes, it's faster then the MK-II.

to fully answer the original question. it is concievable to put an 060 on the a3640 however...

-the 060 runs on 3.3 volts the 040 at 5 so you would need a votage regulator socket to make the change. only one company that i know of makes such a regulator for 060 and it costs about 2-3 times what the above accelerators do.

-the 060 also has a slightly tigher timing spec compared to the 040 and since the a3640 and a3000d are a bit loose timing wise it is likely to be a problem. 3000t 4000 and 4000t systems and 3000d systems with all new rev. chips with a 3.2 a3640 might be ok

-finally any rom on board or os rom that detects the a3640 specifically and uses 040 specific features may have problems. AFAIK this is not a problem.

BTW a sonnet quaddoubler 040 mac accelerator would put a 50mhz 040 on the a3640. there is also a ram expansion specificly for the a3640 that adds much faster ram although i cant remeber the name of it right off.
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
and its read only!

@AmiDude & X-Ray:

Could you two do a "bustest fast" run with your respective card and paste it here?

tonyvdb: 33 Mhz overclocking is extreme, but 32 mhz (64 Mhz crystal) should work without any problem, just replace the crystal and that´s it

@ Patrik

Unfortunately I cannot do that test because at the moment my MKII is in storage and my PPC card is being used.
