Thanks for the info guys, I had a look at the spare 3640 board that I bought on ebay and it was aparently overclocked to 32mhz and it seems that the modifications stated in the above thread were done to it. I just tested it out and it seems to work well.
Amiga 2000HD Indivision ECS
Amiga 4000D towerised OS 3.1 and 3.9 on CF cards
Indivision AGA, Mediator 4000
Video Toaster 4000 Flyer v4.3 Millenium.
202gig of video drive space & 5gig audio.

Ok, as I am not very hardware knolagable this may see like a dumb question.

Can a person with the stock 040 25mhz 3640 board replace the Motorola chip with a faster one like the 060 50mhz or is there other factors that make this impossible?

Well, you theoretically could if you had something like this:

But from the notes I eventually ran across here the 2 or 3 of these 68060->68040 adapters they tried in an Amiga 4000 (3640) never did run stable enough to offer as a retail product (this is back in 1994/95).

What this animal appears to be is one of these S68060-2 Smart Socket from emulation.com (or one of their first generation models) -- but at $430 listed price it seems rather... extremely rediculous?
