Top hangover cures?
« on: December 31, 2004, 09:46:40 AM »
As it's the season for it, and there's a few people going to need them tomorrow, what are your top hangover cures?

Mine are -

1. Burnt toast - doesn't taste very nice, but does the job if you can get it down.

2. IRN BRU - a good Scottish (non-alcoholic) drink.

3. A greasy fry-up.

4. If it's really bad, more beer - sleep the rest of the day :)

5. Do not drink booze in copious quantities in the first place. 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

6. But if you are drinking too heavily: before you go to bed, drink lots of water. If you get up in the middle of the night, drink more. The hangover is mostly caused by dehydration, and this mitigates the headache/dead-horse-in-mouth effect to a great extent.
Some people say that cats are sneaky, evil and cruel. True, and they have many other fine qualities as well.

Absolutely agreed.  Medically speaking, it's the only real preventative/cure for a hangover.

Since I'm the old guy here, let me just say that you should all enjoy yourselves tonight, but don't get stupid.  We would prefer to have all of our users alive on 1/1/2005.

Never works for me.  If I drink water after a night out I end up putting the water into the toilet via my mouth :-(

I have a slice or two of bread before going to bed.  After getting up I spend the first few hours eating bread and have one cup of coffee (unusually black as the milk would have me chucking up again).

Okay, so I have a bit of a hangover for an hour or so first thing in the morning, but the rest of the day is back to normal :-)

Ok, forgot the water, but hangovers aren't just caused by dehydration, although that is the major contributor.

People have noticed for years that darker drinks give worse hangovers than lighter drinks (i.e. whisky as opposed to gin) because of complex protein (i think) compounds called congeners.  Also, combining congeners from different drinks tends to leave you feeling worse in the morning... hence the saying don't mix the grape and grain...

The burnt toast works because of the carbon in it which acts as a filter for the congeners.

p.s. coffee is not good for a hangover because of the diuretic effect

Think tonight it's gluhwein and beer, rather than gin or whisky for me.

btw. if I stick with one kind of beer (from bottle), I can drink as much as I want without getting a hangover.

I suppose I should've stated that the coffe is there just to help peel my eyes open ;-)

Yep, hangovers are partly caused by toxins produced by the breakdown of alcohols in the liver. Ethanol is a poison, most people don't seem to realise that.

Plenty of fluids, some rest, and some aspirin is the best cure. Eating also helps by shifting the body's funtions to digestion rather than making more toxins.

My cure that works everytime, is Drink a couple of bottles of Lucozade Sport before bed, and two more when you wake up.  Chain smoke your way through a pack of 20 fags until you're stomach feels ready for a great big bacon and runny egg butty with lots of brown sauce.  Followed by a cup of tea and a hot shower.

:-)

I'm usually a coffee drinker, but with a hangover tea tastes so much better than coffee does!

Also, I forgot to add: Take any pain killer that has an opiate in it such as dihydrocodeine or similar.  Kills those headaches faster than anything else does. :-D
