DVD storage at 20 Gigs?!?

I was about to post this under CH/Science, but hey! It might be possible to do this too on Amigas. :-)
Here's the story--> The Golden aga is storage?

I hope that will be done on the Amiga? that would be fun! :-D

20 Gigs, that's not much. I think I read on Slashdot not too long ago that some researchers has a way to get 1 Terrabyte.

With that Kind of storage technology, one can store almost all the Amiga games in .ADF and Utilities ever released since 1985 to 2004. All in one whole DVD? Whoooooah!!!  :-o
There's only one dark side to it though. One would brag, "Hey I got the whole Aminet collection, wanna buy it for a buck?"

LOL.. I can say that I have Aminet on floppys..up to disk 9xx I think.. its probably not in order but there are about 7 or 8 disk boxes...they hold about 150 a box.

and can't the normal dvd technique today store up to 18 gigs? (double sided, double layered)
At least, that's what I read in an article back in 1996.

I heard the technology would incorporate 4 layering scheme. by splitting laser or something... :-)

BTW, only true Amigists respect floppys enough.
IMHO, they are still great for most tasks like transferring docs.

Well my USB flash disk lasted for half of year and then it just died. On the other hand, I've got floppys from 80's (3"  ones for ZX Spectrum+3) that still work without BB.

I mean surely&obviously floppys are slow and small capacity, but they are still useful.

I thought that 20G DVD's have been around for as long as DVD itself

I know that accessing a DVD on AmigaOS is somewhat difficult, however I've tested it on my Peg, and it works fine.

Now I just need some relevant (i.e. compatable) software on them


The floppy, however, that's a {bleep} that just wont die. Kill it dead, I say.

I can imagine how long it takes to format a DVD+RW on the Amiga, hmmm, 2 hours?  :-o More loooonger, sleeeepless nights. :lol:

Floppies are still essential on the Amiga, specially when formats like .ADF were needed to transfer back to floppy. Maybe compatibility issues. Besides, Only the Amiga can boot OS+GUI(Workbench) off from floppy better than any OSes AFAIK? :-P

I'm not sure if others would agree to Trash Floppies Forever in favour of CDRW, DVDRW's and the like? Besides, I'd miss it. I miss the 5 1/2 already for the C64. It used to be in abundance. Now a rare relic. :-(
A bad thought crossed my mind: One day we wake up, prices of floppies are higher than prices of DVDR, CDR... No more companies manufacture floppies cause the need is no longer there. Blank Floppies for sale on Ebay at sky-high prices! How much a 5 1/2 floppies these days anyway(if they're still around)? I wonder :-?

I haven't used a floppy on my Amiga in...ages!

I prefer to use a Zip drive. Atleast I can transfer data between my Amiga and my Peg that way.

iamaboringperson : wanna use a DVD on your classic Amiga Not really a big problem, just get yourself a Powerflyer ATA controller and the AllegroCDFS that comes with it and then you can read DVD´s. No need for a PPC, a standard A1200 or A3000/A4000 will do just fine  :-)
