How is MAME on the Amiga
« on: September 23, 2004, 05:59:18 PM »
Just wondering how fucntional it is compared to Winblows versions I have seen (is sound implementation fully functional etc) and what processors run it smoothly?
Seeing as a lot of the old coinops used Z80s and M68Ks (IIRC) anyway, it shouldn't need a lightning fast processor should it?
I like Amigas

Hi Cyberus,

I have tried both the Triumph version of MAME on the 060/AGA and the PPC/Blizzardvision setup. Firstly, the Amiga MAME is not at all optimised to take full advantage of the Amiga hardware, as it is a PC program. It also requires a fair bit of memory (32-64meg) and processing power to get the most out of it.

On the 060 setup i mainly ran games that used Z80 or before. Games such as: Bomb Jack, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Yie Ar Kung Fu, etc. These games ran pretty well (FS1 with no sound or FS2/3 with sound for Bombjack or Yie Ar Kung Fu, etc). But i would bother try games that use the 68000 (Klax) on an 060, as these crawl on this (around 50% speed).

On the PPC, the Triumph version of MAME did not run to well on my setup, it was either pretty slower than normal or it had no sound. But the games that did run worked a little faster than the 060, not much better than i expected.

The Amidog version of MAME is pretty decent. But my advice is get the GUI. This ran very well on my PPC setup and you can get crystal clear sound. It runs games (Z80 or under) very well with sound. But games that use 68000 runs a slow (with sound), but playable.

My advice is get the Amidog MAME with GUI over the Triumph version. Once you have everything setup and running it runs pretty great. BTW, you should give a few of Amidogs emulators a try, as they run pretty decent. But remember, get the GUI! :-)

Regards,
A1200D / AGA / B1260 / 64MB RAM / KS 3.1 / AOS 3.9 / 4GB HD

You'll be better off using WES. The speed es better than the version from Amidog. The MAME team moved to all 16bit while WES still uses 8bit graphics if required making it heaps faster than the latest version of MAME. :)

What's WES? I have never heard of it.

To be honest.

You might be better off getting some old PC and using it to use emulators on since there is alot worked on. VirtuaNES is in my opinino the best emulator out there for NES. If you havent tried it and have a PC, just give it a try.  :-)

But yea, Since Amiga versions of mame may not be kept up to date, then it may be hard to emulate games.

Well Unfortunately, even if the 68k Amiga ran at 500Mhz, the MAME and other emulators would still suck bigtime!!! due to the fact that none of these emulators seem to be able to center the screen correctly and fill the entire screen......the way the PC emulators do......................the PC ones are quite excellent.

I have yet to see a NES emulator for the Amiga that fills the whole screen the way a real Nintendo does.....the same with the crappy C=64 emulators...........I just don't get it...........Amiga had these first and no one can do it right.......whats up with that?

Can someone get the resolution right?

I know an Amiga is capable.....whats up?

This was the only thing I thought the Amiga MAME version was BETTER at than on the PC.  Getting the resolution right.  On CyberGraphX, I could use CyberMode and define any screen resolution I wanted... Even the original arcade display mode, and put that into an acceptable frequency range for my monitor and get a perfectly aspect-ratio fixed and naturally scanlined display.  :-)

Sure, the PC picks a suitable resolution automatically, but it's usually a mediocre mode, at best.  Most games have large black borders or look very blocky because of doubled pixels.

Of course I've only messed with earlier versions of MAME under CyberGraphX.  If you're relying on AGA or P96 you might not have as much luck.  (And if you don't have a PPC, good luck playing anything more complex than PacMan.)

IMO MAME isn't much fun on anything less than 1 GHz, except for very early and simple games. Take something like Roadblasters (for example), it wouldn't run smooth on either my old G3 Pegasos or P-III, you'd have to crank up the frameskip and EVEN THEN it was nowhere near perfect. :-P

Yep, Magnetic is right.  The MorphOS Mame is
quite superb and supports window play, full
screen, overlay with smoothing, nice gui
etc.  I prefer it to the PC version a lot. :)

Mame on an 060 is ok for some of the earlier
titles and can be fun but don't expect it to
run the majority of "16bit" arcade games too
well...

On my Blizzard PPC/Blizzardvision (with Cybergraphics 4.2) setup, i found the resoultion to be pretty excellent. It is a pity that emualtion on the Amiga is next to {bleep}. :-( That is why i got a G3 iMac, for the emus and even now i am going to upgrade to G4 to get the better out of it. Anyway, here there are some decent emus on the Amiga: Flamingo, ASp, MagiC64, Frodo 2.4, Atari 800; all ran well on my setup.

Just to splice this subject, what is NeoGeo emulation oike on Amiga? On Mac and Windows, it runs nigh-on perfect! I can't believe i am playing Metal Slug at nigh-on full speed on my G3!!! :-o

@ Ilwrath

Dont know what versions of MAME you used on the PC, but they are Superb..super easy to change the resolution to be exactly like the arcade with Scanlines and all..no borders.

I have seen also the MorphOS version and it is quite good.

As far as 68K Amiga Versions...........I hate the fact that they require Gfx cars to center the screen and to run properly.......it should work fine on a plain A1200 since most old arcade games and NES, SNES, Genesis, have 256 colors or less.

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

Although I think the link is still related to my site, however I haven't got them there anymore. Hopefully on Aminet things are available. :)

Ah yeah i (accidently) bumped into that site ages ago. But i only tried out the NeoPocket emulator. Which ran okay with no sound, but i could not control it :-? But please tell me what NeoGeo emu is like on Amiga? On the PC and Mac, it seems to run excellently for some reason.

MAME is rubbish on 68k. Probably on Amiga in general.

My favourite emulators are AmiMasterGear, CoolNES and AmiGameBoy.
Fusion and Shapeshifter are cool too and allow for productive
emulation.

I could never find 128k games for ASp but I know Speculator was pretty
good. Auf Wiedersehen Monty on Magic64 was fun as well.

:-D
