AmigaOS will be forgotten no matter what hardware it runs on. It is a toy OS, incompatible with everything, with next to nothing in good high-quality software, with next to zero users. When you buy it, you buy it out of nostalgia, or you buy it because what *can* be done on it suits your purposes. Expecting anything else is just plain silly.

That sums up my view perfectly.

But for the sake of the people who have spent nearly $500-$1000 on specialist hardware, I hope for their sake that the final version of OS4 is released sometime soon.

at my job I'm a programmer, we have deadlines.

They just had this discussion on the Amiga World site. You're an employee of the company that produces the software products. Most, if not all, of the OS4 programmers are not Hyperion employees. They work on OS4 in their spare time. Hyperion can't really set deadlines for them. Given the financial constraints, this arrangement isn't going to change any time soon. It's far from ideal but, apart from the "flexible" time line, it seems to be producing surprisingly good results.

Why then Can't Hyperion use AMigaworld or some other site for free as it's announcements for updates/fixes/addons.

Wouldn't it be great to have a web page that get's updated by someone saying
*Issues outstanding
1.
2.
3.
*New features
1.
2.
3.
*Fixes
1.
2.
3.

You know, dates / times how many people working on what???
If they are hireing people to do certain taskes in their own time, why not hand a few out to public to solve too.

AROS are kings at doing this type of dev. But most of all, they keep you informed by their website on what still needs doing and what's been fixed etc...

How many people do you know that would do the updates to a page like that for free? I could find 5 or so already that would love to help out.

No more seaching for forum chatter and wade through trolling, a website page that tells you what's what.
It's not the question, that is the problem, it is the problem, that is the question.

No - they're not welded together *YET* - but they're working hard towards that:

For individual features or major releases?  I find it unthinkable to work on a team where deadlines are really enforced.  I'd go crazy!  I just release a little at a time when I'm sure it's stable.  Almost everything is a work in progress, so why hold back?

Then I take it at least some of them have experience with Open Source?

"Release Early, Release Often"

I've always been disturbed how they've been building-up for a big release with little to no activity in between.  In fact, I'm rather surprised a "pre-release" was delved out at all.

Then again, OS4 is definately not UN*X.  I'm learning more about UNIX-style architecture every day and I'm starting to really hate the essential design of everything else.

As they have been for the last decade.  Devices with "built-in" support only for Windows are nothing new.  I'm not saying I'm not concerned, but I find it impossible to believe that without big Linux fans like IBM, any standard will hold.  The more I read about Longhorn (specificly, functionality and organization), the more I think Microsoft is really losing it... fast.

Then again, Linux people just copy everything Microsoft does, anyway.  It pains me to see just how much KDE looks and works like a Windows box.

It'd probably be wise to get it out before Christmas, since some of us amigans wouldn't mind buying a shiny new Micro A1 as an xmas present to ourselves  :-P

No offense guy but if the largest software company in the world consistently failed to meet its deadlines with its Longhorn product and then decides to drop key features for the first release, I don't think the OS 4 team has anything to be ashamed about.

The fact of the matter is that OS 4 represents a jump in functionality from AmigaOS 1.3 to 3.9.

I'd like to know:
will OS4.0 run on classic Amiga?
Are all PPC Amigas compatible with each other so they can all run OS4.0 (for eg. A1200 with PPC card and A1)?

Excuse me for being such a ignorant newbie. :mickeymouse:
Better sorry than worry.

@orange
No OS4 will not run on classic AMIGA hardware.
It's a barnd new OS designed to run on PPC technology, not legacy 68x and thank god for that. Those chips are now defunct and will not be produced in number or revisions so we all need to get with the times there. Not that I didn't like the old 68x it's just Motorolla have decided not to go this way.

I agree with the above about releasing the OS4. Release the damm thing and offer upgrades etc to fix bugs, like Microsoft, Linux etc and all other serious OS's.
You get fixes all the time in Linux, new kernals, improved functionality, fixed drivers etc.. Same with winblows etc.
Have a web site to d/l fixes for. You could even generate some extra cash for yourself by selling service pack upgrades on CD for non internet users! or for people that want the CD.

I hate the way things are run at the moment, but hey, what choice do I have!!
It's not the question, that is the problem, it is the problem, that is the question.

@Orange
Yes. No. Yes it will run. No they're no compatible but AmigaOS4 has a HAL (hardware abstraction layer). Drivers will be done for the classic Amigas upgraded with a PPC card.
If the plan hasn't changed, the A4000 Cyberstorm card version will even be the first to be released. The A1200 will be the last one though but it does exist and has already been in betatest for a while.

BeOS was nothing special.

BeOS had features in 1996 which even today none of the major OSs have.
It had all the power of a unix system (protected & virtual memory, POSIX(ish) standard, a decent office suite, decent browser, multiprocessing, heavy multithreading, very good OO API, very easy to use and highly responsive (still the most responsive you'll find today on x86). Oh, and it rarely, if ever crashes.

Today, OS X is the most advanced OS around but even it will have to wait until the next release to get BeOS's search capabilities.

It may be "nothing special" now but it will still take several *years* for any of the OSs serving this community to get even close to the level of functionality in BeOS.

Yes Ikir!,

The only thing we can do is to wait..
And i think that the industrial market is the only thing that can bring down the price of the amiga one so it's better to wait...
