Any new news on OS4 Release yet?
« on: September 23, 2004, 02:29:13 AM »
Hey all,
I keep waiting and waiting. Has anyone heard anything more on when we might expect to see a release of OS4? I'm not talking beta's or fixes/patches or any of that guff. I mean an actual release for people to go out and buy.
I was told September the last time and well it seems almost as quiet as when Fleecy was running things.
Hate to say it sounds like wolfs in sheeps clothing or anything but no one seems to know much of anything appart from that's it's still being worked on and "When it's done" crap.

I know you all are waiting too and there's nothing more we can do but wait, but surely some of you know some of the people on the Dev team, are we getting any closer?? Will it be this year?
It's not the question, that is the problem, it is the problem, that is the question.

my understanding is that OS4 will be available when the MacroA1's come out. and that, i believe is next month.

I don't have any special powers or ESP. I just get that impression from beta testers.

anyway, talk to Russ, order what you need/want from him.
the no CARB diet- no Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld or Bush.

I doubt it will be out next month - they haven't even released the Beta update yet that Ben Hermans said would be out the end of August.

They still have some work to do to support the Industrial version so I don't think we will see the completed version before November.

I bet the Beta update will be available when the Micro A1 boards are ready.

i love the amigaos, i really do. but amigaos 5 NEEDS to be on x86 hardware if it is gonna survive. whenever amiga os 4 comes out anytime soon is not realy the issue. the problem is hardware (and yes i have got an amiga with a blizzard ppc card, blizzardvision gfx card and {bleep} loads of memory in the biggest case you have ever seen!! , but it sits in the cupboard, i use uae for my fix) people NEED an OS that is usable and powerful i recon building it for PPC hardware is just another monumental mistake to add to the catalogue.

oh yeah i know about AROS and i love it, (this is not a shameless plug!!)
heh heh i may be an asshole but i built an A1200 into the biggest case you have ever seen

If we believe Fleecy then AmigaOS5 will be completely hardware-agnostic and run on everything from x86 to PPC to your gran's microwave and your cellphone.

I don't see any problem with restricting AmigaOS to PPC hardware.  Being on x86 didn't do BeOS any good, even when it was free.  People downloaded it, played with it on their PC for ten minutes, then rebooted into Windows and forgot about it.  This is exactly what would happen to AmigaOS if it went x86.

AmigaOS will be forgotten no matter what hardware it runs on. It is a toy OS, incompatible with everything, with next to nothing in good high-quality software, with next to zero users. When you buy it, you buy it out of nostalgia, or you buy it because what *can* be done on it suits your purposes. Expecting anything else is just plain silly.
Some people say that cats are sneaky, evil and cruel. True, and they have many other fine qualities as well.

If the OS was any good, they wouldn't forget about it.  Buying a whole system for $800+ is a lot harder than downloading a trial copy.  I really wish people would stop thinking that x86 and Microsoft are inherrintly welded together.  Linux runs almost exclusively on x86 and that OS it doing just fine in both free *and* commercial trims.

BeOS was nothing special.  The hardware had nothing to do with it.  They could've easily made a proprietary x86 system instead of selling it boxed, thereby cutting Microsoft out of the picture and future-proofing their architecture.  Instead, they went head-on against Microsoft and whined when they got flattened.

BeOS really was the Amiga of the 90's.  They didn't learn anything, and there was no way Be development could reach critical mass with the way they ran things.

My bet: December.

Anyway the update will bring OS4 to a new level, it is another OS4 compared to the pre-release.

Every A1 users will have the update, so the final release is less important imho.

I really don't want to create a flame fest, or a AO VS AW discussion, but on www.amigaworld.net you can find always the lastest infos.

I keep waiting and waiting.

There is absolutely no reason to wait. OS4 is usable for your all day use. Buy the ยต-A1-C or I and you'll be happy.

Go around you, look at OS4 running on A1 around you. Go to Amiga shows. You'll see it for yourself.

no deadlines = crap.  sorry.

at my job I'm a programmer, we have deadlines.  You give a date to a customer on changes you're making, and you meet those dates regardless.
