How easy is it to install?  Can I get a 50x IDE cdrom plug it in and it will work? or do I need Asim cdfs ?

Very easy.  Just get any IDE CD-Rom, The shorter the better.  Install it then grab IDEFix 97.  Mount the CD0 with the atapi.device.  If you have OS 3.5+ you don't need IDEfix!

If you've got OS 3.9, it's only a matter of setting the jumpers,
installing CacheCDFS and setting the proper id for CD0.  I'm using
a 16X Pioneer DVD Rom in my 4000D with this configuration and it
flies!

EzDine: U talkin bout that steal of a deal A4000D you bought on ebay? :)

I believe mine only has 3.0 ROMS and only 3.1 WB would be a guess.. I may or may not have 3.5 or 3.9 here I'd have to dig in my boxes. (bought a house, boxed everything I didnt need).

So if I dont have 3.5 or 3.9 only 3.1 (?) then I need IDEFix97 and atapi.device, correct?

But then, I suppose he's likely to have OS3.9 running if he doesn't have a CD drive :-P
I like Amigas

Naah... That won't arrive until next Wednesday at the earliest.
I've got a 4000D with a Cyberstorm MK1 '060, Picasso IV and EB920 Nic
I built myself a while back.  I started with the 4000 board listed on ebay a
few months back with a broken chip ram SIMM retainer (remember that one?)

Anyway, I found a real neat fix for that clip.  It'll never bother me
again ;)  I don't even want to say how much the P-IV and Cyberstorm cost..

I'm still recovering from that one.

With 3.0/3.1 just drop the cd0 from storage into devs:dosdrivers
and edit that cd0 "CDFileSystem" template to get 'er buzzing.
The scsi.device from the kickstart will recognize the ide CDRom just
fine as device 0 or 1, depending on your jumpering.  Maybe I'm crazy,
but the combination IDE HD/CDROM chained of the motherboard seem a
hell of alot faster than the integrated SCSI on the Cyberstorm.

Well, you're either crazy :-D, or something is wrong with your setup.  The motherboard IDE is non-DMA and PIO-0 slow (<3MB/s).  It's fine for a CD-ROM, ZIP, etc. but for a HD you really should use the CS.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Are you sure about this?

In my opinion this is not so - you will be able to use a real SCSI CD-ROM in the way you describe, but ATAPI drives might not work properly without IDE-Fix.

At least the last time I tried to get the CD-ROM working from IDE on a 3.1 system, it wasn't quite as easy as moving the dosdriver and setting the unit.. I seem to remember I needed to install IDE-Fix and then it started going.

As far as I know scsi.device can't handle ATAPI devices such as a CDROM and that's why we need something like IDEFix or AsimCDFS etc.

To install OS3.5/3.9 you need a CDROM so if you don't have a CDROM the chance you have OS3.5/3.9 installed is slim. ROM3.0 is the most common rom in the A4000 and with it the best WB you can have is 3.1.

Anyway, what you need to know about the A4000 is that it has a very short 5.25" bay so get hold of a short CD drive or you won't be able to fit it inside (also try to make sure that the IDE cable for the CDROM doesn't totaly block all the airholes for the PSU as that is pritty risky and easy to do).

This is a good drive for the A4000, I'm waiting for one to be delivered:

Don't know where I read it but 12-16X is the maximum speed the Amiga can read a CD (perhaps it was with the internal IDE and other IDE controllers do better)... can anyone enlighten me?

Hi,

if you've got an Amiga with Kickstart 2.0/3.x and want to use
CD-ROMs (or Haddrives >4GB) at the internal IDE with no need
of IDEFix, look at my page:
http://www.amiga-ide.istcool.de

Only german, but might be helpfull. ;-)
