Watch your local recycler!
« on: September 09, 2004, 03:14:30 AM »
I've had this nagging feeling lately that I should keep an eye on the recycle pile at the Computer store across the street from my work.  Today I stopped in for a look and I spotted an Amiga 4000D 040 deep in the pile.

I asked the merchant if I could purchase something off his "junk pile", and he said "sure just don't make a mess".  I bought it for $4.00.  It was about to be stripped and recycled :-(.

I took it home and opened it up. The front case plastic is BADLY yellowed. The battery was badly corroded so I removed it.  It has a Phase 5 graphics card/flicker fixer in it. It's a Cybervision 64/3d with scan doubler.

She booted up to a workbench on my PC's monitor!  All of the rest of my stuff is in storage since a move so I don't have a mouse or keyboard available yet.

Next time you go by a PC recycler, stop in and look for any Amiga's.  I can't believe this machine was about to be scrapped. I pains me to think about all the Amiga's being tossed out!

Although I already have a nice collection including a 4000D, I was really excited to see it still boots.  The Graphics card/FF combo is a plus also.

It could still have a bad mouse port or something and I can't test for that until retrieve a mouse and keyboard from storage.

My main reason for this post other than the excitement of finding it, was to let people know that our classic Amiga's are being tossed out!

Jeff

Greetings,

@TjLaZer

You know the old saying, A person's trash is another person's treasure. :-D

The guy who threw it away does not understand the value of that IMO. Well his loss.

@Jeff
:pint: Another one for the road! May you find more! Err somewhere else I hope other than the dumpster... Of course. :-D

@all

Be vigilant! :-o

Regards,

Gizz

@ Jeff

That was a great find, mate. I would say even if you found only the CV64 without a scandoubler, you would score for that amount of money.

It's such a sweet feeling get honeys for free right. 8-)

Had an A2000 and A4000 sent to me for free (didn't even pay for the postage)... guess the company was trying to write of stuff... one need to be out there everyday to get those finds. (I spend about 30-60min (spread on 4 times) a day reading all over the known and not so known places trying to get my hands on sweet sweet love for free or cheep. :-D

Earlier this year I rescued 3 A2500s and an A3000UX plus some misc hardware/software from a library.  They were going to send them to the high school in that town for soldering practice!  All of the machines ran fine they all had HDDs and 2 of the A2500s have bridgeboards installed and 68030 cards!

I'm glad I was looking at old computers at goodwill that day, because the lady from the library happened to be there and was telling me about them!

This reminds me of a summer job I had at NASA a few years ago (no lie).  Basically a contract was rolling up, and I was in charge of stripping PCs down, removing and erasing then physically destroying any HD's less than 10gb, building new "good" ones from the parts (min. spec P200 w/128mb RAM - that's no lie either).  Anyway, as the contract began to wind down, more esoteric computers began to come across my bench.  So one day, this box gets put down on the table and what do you know?  Inside are TWO SGI Indy workstations (32mb ea. 800mb HD, no external media) and a NewTek A2000 (an a2000 with an 030 card, a Toaster, and I think a 200mb HD).

I asked if I could have the lot of them, but the supervisor told me I'd have to bid on them at the gov't. auction same as everyone else.  :( :( :(

Broke my heart to yank the HD out of the Ami and nuke it.  I told them that the SGIs wouldn't function, period, without the HDs so they let me put them back in but I had to totally erase them with "gdisk.exe" (nine-pass 0-byte writer).

Back away from the EU-SSR!
