Firstly, id Tech 4 is due to go GPL sometime this year but AFAIK it hasn't yet. Quake 4 isn't really id's to open up since it was mostly that Raven developed it, using id's engine and expertise. It also requires OpenGL supporting pixel shaders.

Secondly, who is "they", exactly? It isn't as if Hyperion themselves have taken time out of their schedule working on OS4.x/MAP/whatever, this is Pete's handiwork. I don't really understand the negativity here.
