Debian 4.0 Etch
« on: September 10, 2007, 12:23:33 PM »
Just bought a mag with a DVD of Etch on it - mainly cos it also included the PowerPC build along with the usual x86 (and an AMD64 one but thats irrelevant for me).

My question - has anyone got Etch to install on the AmigaOne yet ? if so, what do I need to a) do b) watch out for ? I presume I'll have to get a custom A1 version of the 2.6 kernel for the A1 and install that by hand...

anyone ?

yeah, well, my 2nd cousin might well have dsl, but his 2nd cousin (me) doesnt - as he is forced to use dialup still, in this the 21st century !
Dont fancy netinstall at 56kb/s....

I believe so, yes - still, its more recent than my current install (which I hardly use btw - its mainly to fiddle with - keep me hand in so to speak !) which is 3.0 - woody or potato, IIRC.

as long as I can mount Amiga FFS volumes, and view sites that Ibrowse can't cope with, I'm happy !

short answer ?

CA$H !!

long answer - three kids, two of which need school shoes every 5 minutes, and a luddite for a spouse, who thinks t'internet is overrated. till she wants me to look something up, or email some photos !

although, that may be about to change, with new rules at work on payments for standby officers :-)

How much you paying for dial-up

my broadband works out ccheaper than dial-up ever was

penny a minute at weekends, penny and a half for the same on week evenings.
TBH I dont go on that much, these days (no time ! got into Heroes on DVD) but I rarely spend more than 15 quid a month - often a tenner a month.

I have heard of people having successfully upgraded from Woody to Etch, and that I guess it's the easiest way to install it.

I guess that's what I'll do then - I guess I'll need something better than a 2.4 kernel won't I ? Is Ross Vumbaca still maintaining AmigaOne Linux kernels ?

and then £10 - £15 a month on internet

yeah, I pay extra for those cos its an 0845 number - Abelgratis, as it happens.

with talktalk for example.  £21 a month all in, for up to 8mb.  No bt line rental. free calls to landlines all day annd night and weekends.

Seriously look into talktalk and someother comapnies like tiscali, will work out cheaper

I've already looked into it believe me !
there's not just the subs charges, but intial set up, etc. to be outlayed.

No, the current maintainer is Geri, he does still put new kernels on the amigaone-linux homepage. I'm not sure, but I guess you can use both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels with Etch, althought the latter is recommended. You should install 2.6 kernel only *after* you have upgraded to Etch (or Sarge), though. I hope that someone will write an updated Debian installer, someday.

Ta, I'll bear that in mind - actually the disk I have is supposed to have a nifty installer on it anyway.

-edit- actually, its probably only for PowerMacs (PCI ones) so might not work out of the tin on an A1.

had a look at this last night - well, I tried to, but I couldnt get my Woody install to boot ! I must've wiped out the linux kernel settings from UBoot, and forgot how to get it to boot. (It got panic attacks, and paused for 3 minutes before re-UBOOTing)

I did notice that there is a pegasos boot file on the DVD - written in FORTH, which is cool !

@JJ

not the broadband - I've got the free TV package (no extras I have to pay for) and a phone package they don't offer anymore... All day everyday, my local and national calls are free. BB is extra, and I still need to pay extra to get it installed.
