Amiga Software Issues and Discussion / Re: OS 3.2 - Is it the cause of all my problems?

I have removed these new versions from all my systems. I still use OS3.9.

I know it's problems and it doesn't do dirty tricks to me.

Amiga Hardware Issues and discussion / Re: A2000 serial speed
« Last post by Castellen on September 20, 2023, 09:14:23 PM »
While the A2000 serial port will operate at 115200 baud, the limitation is that the 68000 CPU is not able to service receive data interrupts fast enough, meaning you'll get a lot of RX data over-runs, even if you use hardware flow control.  i.e. a loss of serial data.

If you have a CPU expansion, such as a 68040, you shouldn't have many issues with transferring large blocks of data at 115200 baud with the onboard serial port.

You can do more with third party serial port expansions since most of them include a FIFO buffer in hardware.  This results in far less interrupts needed by the CPU to fetch the received data, since the interrupts collect received blocks of data from the FIFO buffer as opposed to individual bytes.

I was under the impression the A2000 needed for the -5V for the boot process.

The A2000, as with other Amigas, only needs +5V to boot normally.  If you want audio output and RS232 serial, then you need both +12V and -12V as well.  Most floppy drives and mechanical hard drives need both +5V and +12V.

The A2000 also needs the 50Hz/60Hz tick signal that normally comes from the power supply.  It won't boot without it as this timing reference increments some of the hardware timers.  For non-original power supplies that don't provide the 'tick' signal, you can change main board jumper J300 from external to internal which drives the timer from an internally derived signal instead.

Huh, I was under the impression the A2000 needed for the -5V for the boot process. Thanks for the info.

Amiga Hardware Issues and discussion / A2000 serial speed
« Last post by RetroNinja on September 20, 2023, 05:43:28 PM »
Hello,

I'd like to use my A2000 to connect to a PCengines router. The router talks through the serial port at a fixed speed of 115200. I've read other places that this speed is too fast for the A2000. Does anyone know if the limitation is from CPU+custom chip? just CPU? Can I install an old Zorro II GVP I/O card (parallel + serial) to get a higher speed? With the serial processing handed off to the I/O card would I be able to achieve the needed speed?

For me it was only when I installed a clean OS3.2 (with OS3.2 roms) installation that all my nagging issues disappeared.
I recommend you take your system down to the motherboard and then slowly reinstall your cards in an attempt to pinpoint the source (s) of your issues

Thanks, that's the problem, I have done that with both my A4000D and A1200 and still have issues from loading games on my Gotek to WHDload. To not being able to install the Freepro USB software to just not being able to boot.

I will try again with my Amigas but I think for most compatibility and gaming (witch the 1200 will be for) I will go back to 3.1 if I have issues.

Regards

Barry

From the photos online it's a passive cable that appears to connect -5V from the ATX supply to -5V on the A2000 connector (white wire).

https://www.amigastore.com/a2000-power-adapter-cable-amiga-2000-p-998.html

It's fairly rare to see much that uses -5V.  All I can think of is a few older Zorro 2 expansion cards and video processing expansions.  The A2000 itself will operate fine without the -5V supply.

For AmigaKit's power supply cable:

A2000 ATX PSU Power Adapter Cable for Amiga 2000
[ADAPSU010]

Does anyone know if the ATX power supply has to have a -5V line? Or, does this cable convert a spare +5V to -5V? Another way to say the same thing, is there any intelligence in this adapter or is it just a straight through cable converter?

Amiga Hardware Issues and discussion / Re: PiStorm firmware upgrade.

Any answer to this question. I have my Picasso96 setup exactly like the PIStorm in instructions explain how to .
But when I go into P96 Preferences why do I get this as my Board and not Emu64-VC4?
Brad Hansen

If you get the latest build of emu68-tools from here, there are now two versions of the video card driver, with the old and new names. Otherwise it's the same file but it will help avoid confusion.

And I can only find instructions on how to do that on a Windows machine,

Maybe these will help: https://github.com/captain-amygdala/pistorm/wiki/Musashi-and-Emu68-on-the-same-%C2%B5SD,-booting-from-the-same-drive#Repartitioning

Ignore everything else in this entry, but the repartitioning section will help with the theory. I've not got the kit to test the instructions.
