Drives will not format after using crossdos :-(
« on: July 04, 2004, 04:52:38 PM »
Hey all after using crossdos my amiga won't format any floppies, it says could not format cylinder 1, I know for a fact the drives and disks are fine because I've used them recently, what could have gone wrong? :-(

I think maybe it could be just my A1200 showing it's age, anyone else had a problem like this? Kinda frustrating because I just spent a lot of money on the old girl and it's all going horribly wrong :-(

Remove CrossDOS and see if that helps.  If not, try cleaning the disk drive with a cleaning disk.  If these things do not work then buy yourself an Amiga 2000 or an Amiga 3000 Tower.   :-D
My favorite TV shows:  Star Trek Voyager, Forever Knight, Stargate SG1, Married with Children, As Time Goes By, Mr. Bean, Smallville, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Xena

Is it an Escom Amiga?
Make sure that you use DD disks, and not HD ones.

Also, pay no attention to "BoingBoss". He's an idiot, and deserves to be shot.

It doesn't matter if a disk was being formatted with CrossDOS or it's an Amiga disk, you always can format it.
Just be sure that you're using the right formatting method.
Because there are some different format methods in CrossDOS, like: MSDOS 360k Format, 720k Format, 1.44M Format etc. Always use 720k Format. Though that should be the default even when you don't use these format methods. If you have mounted PC0: (meaning the PC Floppy disk) and inserting a disk, you will see 2 floppy icons on Workbench.
If it's a PC disk, then you'll see a floppy icon named DF0:BAD and another floppy icon with a name, probably the name set for the disk on PC. If it's an Amiga disk, then you'll see the Amiga floppy with a name and a PC0:BAD floppy icon.
So if you want to format it as an Amiga disk, then select the AMIGA floppy disk icon (DF0:), and select format from the menu. That will create a nice Amiga formatted disk.
I you want to format a PC floppy, then select the PC floppy disk icon (PC0:) and select format from the menu.
If you have an ESCOM Amiga, i would suggest you to use DD (Double Density) floppies, or just use a tape on the hole in the left upper edge (when holding the floppy with sticker side to your face). :-)
You also can try to clean the floppy drive and check again. It's a real dustbin. :-)
If all that fails, then your floppy drive might be having problems. Mine had problems and i had to replace it. :-(
Now the new one works perfectly! :-D

i would also suggest formating pc floppies on PC's, as pc's are dumb. if the media works and is seen on a pc then you can place it in your amiga and copy files to it.

also, consider using fat95 from aminet as that sees long file names.

I used DD disks all the time, and even after a re-boot with all peripherals removed it just says cannot format cylinder 1. My internal drive is faulty but I have 2 external drives that have always worked before :-(
