Best Amiga icon-set?
« on: July 02, 2004, 02:33:43 PM »
Hi,

I used to use my Amiga 1200 with the Magic WB icons, which was great for my 8 colour workbench. Now I've 'upgraded' to WinUAE and have the luxury of a 1024 x 768 x 24 bit picasso64 workbench, I'd like to install a nicer-looking icon-set.

I've seen a few very spiffy-looking workbench screen-shots and would like to polish my setup so it looks as great as some of those.

I'm running a fairly standard WB3.0 (which I have setup as dirctories on my XP box - one directory for each Amiga HD partition), with an old version of tool-manager.

Any help or suggestions for making my WB look gorgeous, would be greatly appreciated!

I'm also looking into 'upgrading' my WB to 3.9, if anyone thinks it's worth it? Where would I be able to get my mits on the complete WB 3.9 installation?

Cheers,

Mike.

PowerIcons (available on Aminet) look great.  They use 32bit PNG icons, and you can borrow new icons form Linux distributions, etc.  But, it only works with OS3.5 and later.

OS3.9 is a commercial product and must be purchased.  Most Amiga dealers have it in stock.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

AmiCrystal icons is the best set atm imo! But this needs the Powericons patch installed, which patches the system icon.library to use 32bit png pictures as icons.
It's in Aminet under the name Ami-Crystal.lha :-)

You can see how it looks, just check MrCarlitoWB-07.jpg in aminet too. Use the search function to find them. :-D

These new multi-coloured Workbench screens are so ugly. An operating
system isn't supposed to look like some 5yr olds lego box.

I prefer the subtle marble effects of MagicWB and I like the way they
have a 3D feel to them so when you click them you notice the
difference.

All these borderless, flat, garish NewIcons/PNG icons are so confusing
to look at and really I think people will get fed up of them and go
back to minimalist productivity.

I think the more creative someone's desktop is the less creative their
actual computer use is. Unless you spend all your time showing off
your desktop?

The best Workbench I think I saw was at WOA '97. The Phase 5 PPC
boards were running the "Bill Gates Gets Pied.mpg" as a backdrop.

:-D :-D :-D

Why can't we have icons that look more Amiga and less Windows XX. I
think those little flat icons are horrible. All of them.

Maybe we should even try making 3D icons that have different
icon-tootypes on each surface of a cube!

:-o

I disagree. Anything that gives you a sense of easy customization will foster the impwession that you are limitless in terms of what you can cweate with the machine.

(I did quite like MagicWB though, BTW.)

My preference is for MagicWB, too - nobody has made a MagicWB icon set for New/GlowIcons that I've seen (probably due to copyright reasons) - Always seemed a shame as it's certainly capable of being done (I have a HD copy of XJ220 that has a MagicWB style NewIcon for it's drawer).  If anyone has such a set I'd love to have a copy! (maybe this is something Martin Huttenloher could do for OS4 and MOS??).

I made a set at my old job for Windows too (that looked 95% the same until you clicked on 'em), but they got lost when I moved jobs and my backup failed (2 years of lunchtime work lost :-().  Again if anyone has a set I'd love to know :-).

As for creativity I think there is a limit at which someone may spend more time creating their interactive computer experience rather than actually using their computer - I used to do this (see previous comment), but don't any more.  Of course creating skins etc is creative, and productive if you share them with others.

This doesn't mean a 'bland' screen makes you more productive though (and I think MagicWB is subtle rather than bland BTW).

I myself had some ideas for future amigas to get the best icon-set done. My idea was animated icons, maybe gif or mng (anim-png). Even have a separate sound when you click on them. Like the RAM disk icon, it has a blue flash going over it from top to bottom when selected and gives the electric "zzzzoom" sound. :-)

Then i saw ho small Lightwave objects (or even Imagine objects) could be and thought: Hey, why not use them as icons? With the correct attributes and colors they would look great, they also would be fully 3D, means you could always rotate them with the mouse by clicking the edge and rotating it to your best position. So that would free us from the pseudo 3D look that came with Newicons. :-)
Icons could be autosnapshotted, so we wouldn't need to select snapshot icon (to hold it that way) everytime from the menu. But there should be an UNDO entry in the menu though, just in case somebody wants back his last selection. :-D

With that feature, we could finally get a full 3D Workbench, which i always dreamed about. :-)

The real trick is making sounds you can listen too a couple hundred times in a row.

3D/Animated/Sound with icons would drive nuts!  That said I'm the sort that has no sound effects with anything cause they get annoying after a couple of times ...
