What digital cameras does everyone have?
« on: July 02, 2004, 05:43:02 AM »
With the 6-megapixel cameras appearing in highstreet shops and no
doubt even better ones in the specialist digital photography market -
what cameras do people on Amiga.org use?

What connection methods do you use - serial port, high-speed serial,
USB or some sort of card reader?

Do you print the pictures on Amiga, PC, Mac or from a self-contained
photo printer?

:-D

Sound off!

I've got a crappy old Sony Mavica.  The cool thing is that it writes jpegs directly to a HD floppy drive built in it.  The bad thing is that it is slow, immense, heavy, and 1995 recently called me, asking for their camera back.

As far  as digital goes i`ve got a packard bell 2.1Megapix dc3
(which is not supported by Xp pro - doh!)...
i`ve got to use my web cam or start up a win98 machine...

But if i need good photos then i`ve got a nice 35mm OM10 or OM2 to use and it`s just a simple case of getting the photos onto cdrom through any high-street photo service.

Are you pondering on getting a digi,  Hyperspeed?

Sony F717

I'm going to try it with Amiga once I get a USB Zorro card adapter and a Memory Stick to USB adapter.

I have a Casio QV-3, 3Mpixel.  It's small, reliable and has some advanced features you might expect on a SLR.  My only problem with it is that the software is very buggy.  However, Windows XP has a builtin driver which works great, and I use that since I upgraded.

I hook it up to the PC with a USB cable.

I always download my pics to the computer, then take the ones I like to Boots on a CD to get them printed professionally.

I have an Olympus Camedia C5060 Zoom. A great camera.

I have also had a Nikon D70 on order for *over a month*, but so far I have not even got information about the delivery date!! :-(

I print on my PC only, I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300 which is a great printer, possibly the best in its price range (and I was not prepeared to pay a higher price).
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

I have a Canon Powershot S400 that I bought in New York last year (it's called Digital IXUS 400 in Europe). I'm extremely pleased with it, it produces excellent 4 megapixel images. The only negative thing about it is that it doesn't have a lot of manual shooting options, so if you like to tinker with shutter speeds and aperture sizes it's not the camera for you.

I don't use it at all with my Amiga (I rarely use it at all these days) so I can't comment on how compatible it is.

I use a Canon i865 printer on my PC to print the photos on 10x15cm (4"x6") photo paper and they are indistinguishable from real photos developed from film.

I use a Minolta Dynax 5 35mm SLR with a Canon FS4000US 4000dpi dedicated film scanner (essentially 48-bit 20 megapixel!!:-o  ).  Does that count? :-D

Not got up to speed on the print side yet, I generally print on Epson Stylus C60 from the PC.

I've got a Canon EOS 10D, 6MPixel Digital SLR
It's big, heavy and was fecking expensive but the picture quality is *awesome*.

You can see some here.

The connection is USB 1.0 which was a bit surprising but CF cards can't even do that speed yet so it isn't a problem.  I personally got a cheap 256MB CF card which is apparantly the slowest on the planet (300K / Second).

I've used it on Mac, Windows and even BeOS.  It's easiest on the Mac with iPhoto but the supplied Windows software works fine.  It should work on any system which supports the PTP standard (new digi-cam standard).

I don't print much but I've got a Epson stylus Photo 1290 which will print up to A3+ size.  I've only printed A4 size from the camera but you can't tell it's taken with a digital camera and they're better than any normal prints I've had done, I should be able to go to A3+ without problems.

--

Whatever camera you get make sure it's got a decent sized lens, it doesn't matter how many pixels you've got if they don't have a good light supply.

Only problem with hires digicams is the room the pics take up, if you take a lot as I do you need lots of room - I backed up and filled a couple of DVDs!
