Just upgraded, any suggestions?
« on: July 01, 2004, 04:50:09 PM »
Hey all, I just did my first ever amiga upgrade to a Blizzard 1230 IV (Many thanks to DoctorQ) Does anyone have any suggestions as to which games I could/should buy that will take advantage of the '030?

Thanks

Robert :-)

I don`t think there are 030 specific games. But any existing games will benefit the extra speed and extra memory the Blizzard will give you.

Get T-Zer0 from ClickBOOM, it requires a CD-ROM drive though.

Also get ADOOM and all the DOOM clones, like Gloom, Breathless, Fears, Genetic Species.  I hope you have a 50mhz 030, but a 33mhz will suffice.

Also try Playing F/A 18 Interceptor on an 030...it will fly!....in some cases it crashes.
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

I used to own a Microbotics 030/50mhz and 32mb ram.. :-(

But games that I would surely play and take advantage of the speed was the Sierra-Online games such as King's Quest 4 and some Dynamix games like Rise of the Dragon or Willy Beamish... :-D

Breathless will work quite nicely on an '030 (I used to run it on an Apollo '020 in 2x2), Alien Breed 3D 1 or 2 ... basically any written-for-Amiga 3D games should work ok.

A few games that require a '030 for max. fun:

Alien Breed 3D (the best Amiga specific Doom clone)

Xtreme Racing (excellent fun racer, includes support for up to four (joy adaptor) or eight (2 Amigas, 2 joy adapters, serial link) players. Available from Back to the Roots)

Bubble Heroes (brilliant "Puzzle Bobble"/"Bust A Move" clone)

Tell me... I have an A1200, a four player adaptor and Xtreme Racing. I just wish I had friends ;-)

Some more:

T-Zero (impressive Shoot'em Up)

VirtualGP (F1 racing)

onEscapee (world class Flashback clone)

Shadow of the third Moon (futuristic flight sim)

TFX (excellent flight sim)

Rise of the robots also runs faster. Try the first rts game Napalm. Or play Prince of Persia with the pc emuator PC-task. I know that this game also has an Amiga version.

Or some racing games like Flyin' High and Jaguar XJ 220.

I guess he asked for good games ;-)

Try the first rts game Napalm.

I think Napalm and similar games (Foundation...) need a better CPU and a gfx card to be playable.

Wow, I've never heard of someone running a game on PC Task before. I
once tried a basic text adventure which was interesting to see it
going on A1200.

As for games that make use of the '030, I think anything that slows
down when there's too many onscreen sprites will be speeded up. The
68030 is as compatible as the '020 unlike the '040/'060 so even
hardware hitting demos will move smoother.

The 68882 50MHz FPU is good too and will speed up Breathless and
possibly the 2x Alien Breed 3D games. Gloom is also much nicer.

I thought XTreme Racing was quite fun but to get Mario Kart style joy
you really need an '060. With an '030 it just doesn't go that fast in
full screen modes as there is possibly a lot of work done that would
eitherwise have been handled by ASIC chips like the SNES's Mode-7.

Certain A500 games like Elite and Syndicate might be a little too fast
or crash though, so disable the '030 if you get trouble by holding "2"
on the main keyboard at startup. Re-enable the '030 by holding
Ctrl-A-A for 15x seconds.

Just for fun, why not try the PD game WBsteroids. It's like Asteroids
that opens in a Workbench window and will definately love your extra
processing power!

Yeah I tried syndicate the other day, a bit too fast lol, I guess the WHDLoad installers would sort out speed issues wouldn't they? Answer to the above question yes it is a 50mhz model, although there isn't an FPU on it yet, I'll probably get one sometime. I already have a copy of xtreme racing on the way, I have gloom already but in the higher resolution it's not really full screen, runs nicely though. I'll get the Ultimate Gloom from Back2roots when my cdrom arrives, thanks for your suggestions everyone!

Wolfenstein 3D works nicely under PC Task ... with an '040 that is.

I hope you don't need an 030 to run XJ220!!

XTreme wheels looks fun, was there ever an '030 version of Leading Lap? I only ever played the A500 demo.

Blizzard 1230-IV is probably the finest accelerator for A1200. 68030/50MHz is quite powerful but still inexpensive and best choice for classic AGA games.
