Not enough graphics mem?
« on: June 30, 2004, 09:12:06 PM »
Hi every one,
Using a Voodoo 3 on Mediator SX.
Screen mode is 800 x 600 .ok no problemo.

BUT, if I try to use the 1026 x 768 mode I get told there is not enough graphics memory to use??????

My Voodoo 3 is a 16meg card.

The monitor I am using is an Microvitec Multisync
PCI card are:-
ES1373 sound
Fast Ethernet card
Voodoo 3

So why cant I use the 1026 x 768 mode.

I even tried it on an 15" digital PC monitor but same problem.

Any one got any clues???

TIA,

Mike.... :-?  :-?

Strange,
 you technically could get 2048x1530....

But i suppose that the cause is that something has eaten up the fast memory...
What else are you running?
(hehe, hopefully not Fblit with the card)
But i suppose that a dodgy memory module could `limit` the available  screenmodes.
(Have you tried  reducing the colours?)

And does it  `crash` or simply go blank when you try the higher modes?

[Or have you disabled the on-board memory somehow?
]

checked here?
or here?

What programs are running when you change the screenmode?

I notice that your Amiga is equipped with 32Mb RAM, which should be more than enough to support your screenmode, but you might struggle for memory if you're running multiple IBrowse sessions and playing MP3s for example.

My Mediator & A1200 isn't working due to a faulty accelerator card, so I'm unable to check my ENVARC settings.  Maybe you could cut 'n paste them here?

When I put my dodgy 64Mb SIMM in and used SysInfo to see my
performance etc. some funny things happened:

After creating a module my CPU was reported as 49Mhz even though it is
50Mhz and also when exiting I was left with 32mb RAM and not 64mb.

I pinpointed this phenomena to SysInfo's graphic routines - with 64mb
it would not return all the memory to Workbench, but with 32mb it did.
This could have just been my dodgy SIMM but just thought I'd share
this with you.

Make sure that nothing is allocating a chunk of memory but not
actually using it. I also noticed Quake 1 68k will eat 50mb on
starting if it can find it!

:-D

Try out the Aminet utility ShowMem to give you a little graphical
display of your memory to see if it gets fragmented or allocated. It's
possible something is filling FastRAM and going into ChipRAM thus
giving you "Out of Memory" when the Voodoo's 16mb may be totally
unused.

OK, got it done, (dont know how) but any way here is i have got.

1026 x 768 in Picaso96 and 1026 x 768 in ScreenMode

Trouble is the width 1026 is there but the depth of 768 is more like 1026 itself????

So I have had to go back to 800 x 600 cant figure this one out????

Hum,
have you got anything else in the DEV: monitors drawer?
(perhaps you could reinstall the devices)
[not that i think that this is the cause]

And have you tried making the screen scrollable?
(er, so at least you can make use of the extra desktop)

[This one is too difficult for me] :-?

Hi

goto in Prefs:Picasso96Mode, and change the value to 1024x768 32bit.

Make a TEST before saving.
