iBrowse 2.3 crashing like Windows 1.0?
« on: June 29, 2004, 06:28:29 AM »
OK I am fed up BiG time!  Whats the F**k's the deal with iBrowse?  It crashes like a mad man on my A4000!  I might as well call it Windows 1.0 !  BUT on my A3000 it seems to runs fine!  NOW I just tried it on my A1200 and it crashes too!  A quick test is to goto eBay and do a search for "Amiga"  Is that a sign? ;)

Well eBay seems to be the kicker, I just usually look for Amiga stuff on eBay a lot. LOL.  Ok I get a Recoverable Alert Guru every time.  Then a hard crash and reboot.

Hey there,

I've been using iBrowse heavily for the last three days on my 4000 without a reboot, including a browse or two through ebay. I don't use disk caching, and I have ebay set for no javascript because it's a bit sluggish. Maybe check for a bad image if you've got a cache. Otherwise, keep digging through the configs and see what stands out.

Hopefully you'll get it figured out.

No problems at all with IB2.3 here on this A4000T/060, but I do notice eBay is especially slow.  It would appear it's HTML coding is not the most efficient.

If you're sure it's not a memory issue, or a problem with P96/CyberGFX then try updating your MUI setup.
Bad MUI custom classes can be the cause of many such problems.

I have an up to date archive here:
http://amiga.serveftp.net/downloads.html

As I'm too slack to write an install script, you'll have to go through the included instructions which will help fix and update your MUI setup.

@TjLaZer

I've been using IB 2.3 for some months now on my A1 without problems, even when searching anything on eBay.

Two big reasons for crashes with IB:
a) Corrupt internet cache
b) Bad MUI classes (I would check all the versions of MUI classes via the main MUI program). Avoid any alpha/beta versions.

OK good news.  I turned off Javascript and viola! No crashes on FleaBay!  OK NOW how do I set up a site for no Java or does it have to be Global?

Yay! iBrowse works again. lol

In URL Prefs, javascript support, check Active, uncheck Setting.

I use http://#?ebay#? for the URL pattern.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear that the crashes have resumed. It's awful to have to deal with it.

Assuming all your Amigas have the same processor, here's what I'd do:

First, check to make sure the program's being started with  plenty of stack space.

Delete the iBrowse disk cache and set the size for disk caching to off.

If those don't help, copy the MUI:Libs/MUI/ and Libs: directories over to the flakey Amigas. (Again, assuming they're all the same processor type.)

If that doesn't solve anything, run CyberGuard (or whatever's appropriate for your processor), SegTracker and Sashimi and see if that doesn't help identify the culprit.

If you've got different processor types in each of the Amigas, it'll take a little more time and effort. You could spend all day combing over your libs and not find any old/incorrect ones. I'd probably skip right to the debugging programs and see what turns up.

If absolutely none of this helps, I'd back up my SYS: directories and start from scratch with a minimal install. If you get to the point where you can get on the net and launch iBrowse, and the crashes stop, then I'd copy a directory at a time over from the backup and try to isolate whatever may be causing the instability.

If the crashes persist after all that, it's time to start looking at the hardware.

...anyway, that's what I'd do. Hopefully you'll find something that at least points you in the right direction.

Try deleting the "ENVARC:mui/IBROWSE.prefs" file, REBOOT, run IBrowse (will default to WB screen), call up the MUI prefs for IB, set prefs as desired.

The IBROWSE.prefs file for MUI seemd to be the cause of some of my errors a while ago.

Good luck!

I thought IBrowse 2.3 was our saviour since Yahoo is now disabled for
the rest of the browsers reading the Yahoo Mail!

I find lately, possibly the last year, that eBay and even Amiga.org
are really slow on my '060 running Voyager 2.96.7.

I have images turned on but I seem to think the code is becoming more
bloated with all the fancy codes and "Microsoft made this" etc. stuff.

I think a lot of it could be image decoding trouble. Sometimes these
browsers use external GIF datatypes and I know that when a GIF picture
decodes on Voyager and it's big then I better start praying.

Some sites also start a flickering red access light as though a MIDI
song is trying to stream or something.

Amiga browsers really aren't keeping up with things, and the web
creators are partly to blame too.

Look at the BBC website, does that EVER exclude you from doing
anything, or slowing you down? Okay so it has RealAudio features but
everything you could possibly want to do and go to is good on the most
basic of computer.

The internet is for everyone, WAP phones and PDAs... so people with
lower specs should always shout out against bloated websites.

:-(
