Glad it got there ok:-)

Both work fine. IMHO P96 is easier to set up. CGfX 4.0 is a commerical product, while CGFX3.0 and P96 are free to install and use. However P96 is shareware so you really should pay the $20 shareware fee if you use it.

cybergraphix supports draggable screens I think.
P96 does not.

Maybe. But if it does, then only on graphics cards that support draggable screens by hardware. And the CV doesn't AFAIK, so it doesn't matter.

Are you quite sure it's by hardware?

No PC VGA chip really supports it by hardware..

At least it doesn't look anything like the Amiga's hardware screen dragging - if the screens are at a different res, they'll still be displayed with the front screens res and depth, thus looking very ugly. (either too wide or too narrow and with sometimes with interesting colour effects :-)

Hi jope,

i agree even if my CV64 under CGX, supports draggable screen (and i think CV64-3D too), i've never used it anyway.

AFAIK, only CVPPC and BVision doesn't supports it at all (and all the PCI GFX card too)

Ciao

No, but at least I am absolutely sure this was the reason they gave for not supporting draggable screens on the CVPPC.

And if they supported software-dragging on other cards, then why not on the CVPPC, too. If it was software, they didn't even need to adapt it, they could just use the same code for all gfx cards.

Bye,
Thomas

@BIG-IRON

Picasso96 is easy to install and free. If you want the most out of the card however you would want to buy and install CGFX4 as it do give a little better performance.

I belive there are more tools/games out there that support only CGFX RTG, not P96. This is sad but with OS4 running on P96 I belive this could soon change to the opposit.

Programms using the CGX API work on P96 either because P96 emulates the CGX API. The other way does not work because there is no P96 emulation for CGX (at least not an official one).

So all programmers supporting CGX for graphics card software support all users while programmers using P96 only support a small group of users.

This is still true for AmigaOS 4.

I've been missinformed and stand corrected I see. Not bad though... I can now get some CGFX tools/games for my Amigas running P96. :-)

This is where a lot of people were mistaken. P96 is only free if you've purchased a Picasso graphics card. Otherwise it's shareware.
I sold my Amiga for a small fortune, but a part of my soul went with it.

Reading through this thread it's interesting because I can almost tell what Amiga you own and when you joined the community or if you are running an EMULATED Amiga through WinUAE (which uses Picasso).

Either way I think both are great standards. As an Amiga Forever user (not the latest) aka WinUAE, it was the first time I had used an Amiga in a higher resolution mode than the Amiga directly supported. It made me think wow I had missed something. The speed was good the support was good. The thing I missed right away was draggable screens.

Even though this is a feature that is specific to the OCS/ECS and partially implemented in AGA (dependent on screen frequency). I really miss draggable screens. It's a User Interface element that other operating systems lack. I found it one feature that intuition had over MacOS, Windows of the day.

I think being able to organize on screens as well as virtual screens is a key element of the Amiga display that shows off it's power.  Too bad it didn't translate to vga and advanced displays as easily..

Picasso96 is Faster.  I use that on my Cybervision 64 and Cybervision 64/3D cards and it runs awesome.
