Problems transferring Twin Express to Amiga A500
« on: June 23, 2004, 08:50:59 PM »
Hi Every1,
At the moment I am trying to restore some ADFs to disk to use on my Amiga A500+. I have run into a problem transferring Twin Express to my Amiga, by saving it on a PC formatted disk then, opening it with Workbench 2.1
When I try this, I get the Message: Not a DOS Disk. I have tried to format it on my Amiga, and also on my PC on the MS-DOS prompt and in My Computer. I still get this message. Also the when I put the disk in after loading Work Bench 2.1 The disk has no file name it just comes up as DF0:???? Please help!
P.S. I have had a look at my RAM disk on Work Bench, and it says it's full! The three folders that are on: ENV, Clipboards and T? Should I delete these? I don't know what they are as I have only just brought the Amiga off of e-bay.

That is meaning that it's not an AmigaDOS disk -- which is correct -- you're trying to read a PC disk.  What you need to do is mount the PC0: device on your Workbench 2.1 "Storage" disk.  Then you can read PC disks by using the name PC0: instead of DF0:

RAM disk is always shown as 100% full.  It uses free system memory to inflate to whatever size is needed.  So, despite it being 100% full, you can still copy more stuff to it, so long as you have free memory in the computer (free RAM count is at the top of the workbench screen)

hi Specs78
NO! don`t delete  ENV, Clipboards and T...(thought it`s quite safe, really, as it`s only data in memory - though you can`t use the amiga afterwards , er, until you reboot  ;)

You tried formating `in full/complete` and not just `quick` ?
it should work...(?)
[when you choose format disk you get a choise of PC0(PC),  DF0(amiga) ?

But
You could double clicked on `crossdos` and get it mounted?

(Crossdos will be able to read and write PC disks , found in sys:storage/dosdrivers drawer called PCO: and PC1: hopefully. )

When a MS-DOS disk is inserted then you will see the MS-DOS icon and a DF0:??? icon. if an Amiga floppy is inserted you will see the normal icon...

Er, remember that when you open a PC formatted disk you need  to see the contents in Show all mode.

Hope that helps...

I wouldn't really call it a bug...  Since the RAM disk is only as large as its contents, its always 100% full.  The gauge is totally accurate, yet, in this case, 100% useless.  ;-)

Or use a RAD, they are of fixed size but persist through a soft boot (although not a hard boot such as those done with Degrader-type utilities).

Especially, if you have enough memory, you can copy your boot disk to RAD and then reboot from it, assuming you're not using a hard drive.

Damn it! I was so close to getting it sorted! I mounted the PC0: device and tried to read the disk, the only problem was that I was still typing DF0: so this was causing the same problem.
If I manage to get the Amiga to  read the disk with Twin Express on it, how do I install the program to the ramdisk? Or don't I need to?
Also What do I do with the ADF file once its in RAM? I was told it would have to be coverted to a ADZ file, because the ADF file is to big to fit on a 720KB disk, is this true?

Yep.  I remember doing the same thing when learning how to use CrossDOS.  :-)  Took me a while to figure out that the same drive had different abilities by calling it different names.  ;-)

Well, that depends.  You probably don't need to "install" it, per se.  If it's just an executable, it should run from anywhere.

If it's a .lha file, you'll have to uncompress it, and copy the files to their proper locations on your (copy of -- not the original! -- always use backups!) Workbench disk.

AFAIK, an ADZ is just a zipped ADF file.  And you are correct that a standard ADF of an 880KB disk won't fit on a PC 720KB disk.

How do you find "show all" in Work Bench 2.1? Also I have formatted the disk on the Amiga, as a PC0: disk (full format, and named it) and when I put Twin Express on it from the PC (by dragging the file into it in my computer)All I can see is the icon for the trashcan, and nothing else. Also does the disk I'm using have to be a 720kb disk? The reason I ask is that the PC won't read the disk It says it need to be formatted?
