Any expierences with the prometheus board?
« on: June 23, 2004, 07:14:55 AM »
Im thinking of towering an 3000 and using a prometheus to get at the voodoo graphics and ethernet cards which are cheap as heeck on ebay. I dont wana pay 200 plus dollars for a tower anyone got some ideas about a cheaper amiga tower?
BIG IRON (Or \\"heavy metal [Cambridge]) Large, expensive,ultra-fast computers. Used generally of number crunching supercomputers such as Crays, but can include more conventional big commercial IBMish mainframes.

The Prometheus sticks out quite wide on an A3000 with the standard desktop-style Zorro riser.  So an average tower probably wouldn't work too well.

Personally, I think it'd be cool to mod out an older server case.  They can be found for mega-cheap at trade shows, auctions, etc.

That should give you good airflow, plenty of drive bays, and a solid power supply (you'll need to build an AT or ATX -> Amiga cable, though).

Heck, if you look around a bit, you might be able to find a server case with live SCSI bays such that you could plug that section right into your HD controller.  Then you could mount your HDs in the old hot-swap cartridges.  (Just don't pull 'em while the Amiga is running!)  :-)  It could be pretty slick.  (though it would be large...)

Make your own tower, it's not terribly difficult. Here's some suggestions.

Use a PC Full tower case, or server case. Ideally get an AT-Riser full tower case, but they are very difficult to come by nowadays. Failing that get a regular AT full tower. AT power supplies are easier to convert for use with an Amiga than an ATX. However if finding a suitable AT tower is tough, go ahead and get an ATX full tower. Making an adapter is still pretty easy.

When looking for towers, keep a couple things in mind. The tower needs to be able to hold a full size motherboard. Most full towers can. Make sure the 3&1/2 drive bays don't obstruct the motherboard or accelerator board. You will probably find most cases the 3&1/2 drive bays will be in the way. The best way to get arround this is take them out. Most good cases will let these bays unclip easily. Most full tower cases have an additional HD bracket up top. For floppy drive and other HDs just use a 3&1/2 to 5&1/4 adapter for use in the big bays up top. Most full towers have 7 or so 5&/14 slots.

Try to get the widest tower you can find. The wider the better. The best I have found so far is 8&1/2" wide. In this tower the Prometheus can go in the top slot, with the case still being able to be closed. In the skinnier towers like ones only 6&1/2 wide the Prometheus will have to go in the bottom slot for the case to close. This isn't ideal.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. I have done a few conversions and know alot of the pros and cons of various procedure. My current projects is using a tower I happened to have laying around. It really wasn't an ideal candidate. When finished the Prometheus will probably have to be in the second to bottom slot. I'll be adding more picture to the link soon. I am changing the tower quite radically from my original idea.

Hmm.. If you are interested i will probably be selling this particular tower case in the near future. I am going to do another conversion with a wider tower. Ask any question you may have:-)
