Where can i get MorphOS?
« on: January 25, 2003, 10:31:24 PM »
I will be getting a PPC based A1200 from  friend soon and would like to run a full PPC base OS on it. From what I understand, MorphOS is available, yet from all my investigations, I can only find it bundled with the Peg. I cannot afford the Peg (or A1 see my other thread!) but would like to use MOS to compare it to my exsisting 3.9 setup.

Does anyone know where I can buy MOS as a standalone package?

Three options:

1. You use the stoneold beta (somewhere on the net don't ask me).
No Ambient more bugs less features than the Peg-version and
will start to crawl after 30 minutes.

2. You wait for a current version to be released. This is supposed to
be (allmost ?) free, but since it would also bring a bigger and not
so fanatic audience to the OS Genesi have to be sure that it runs
o.k. on all those countless different HW-configs you might get on a
"classic".

3. You develop interseting SW, and you might get a current dev-version
or maybe even a Pegasos for free.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Well number 3 is out for me! I have trtied to learn C and gave up!

So that leaves me with "sit down, shut up and wait for AOS4 or MOS to be released" I suppose. Well at least I know!

Hmm, wonder if they would let me beta test? :lol:

Thanks Kronos :pint:

Yeah, apparently if you port some unimportant open-source app to MorphOS they give you a free pegasos (or more than one?) when paying customers have to wait months. Great, eh?

@KennyR

Maybe because they know that they will never be able to make a profit
by selling desktop-computers ? But they could make a profit selling STBs
and XXL-PDAs if they got some good SW for them ?

Good SW comes from developers, and gettting those is the key
issue in this tiny market, not selling 1-3k desktop-machines to an
obscure community.

@Kronos

We do make a profit on the desktop machines, but we re-invest it because we see a bigger future (and we need help on the projects you mentioned!)

@bbrv

Sure you get more for a board than it costs to produce, but how
many boards would you need to sell to finance all your staff, the
licences for MUI,TurboPrint  ..... the trade-shows and events, the banners
development of the April and maybe even all the money bPlan invested
before you came into the picture ?

I'm quite sure that only non-desktop-HW could finance this in the end.

Oh and instead off fighting the trolls it might be a good idea to
reply to my post over at ann.lu  ;-)

@Kronos

We aren't *all* trolls on amiga.org!

However, you are right about bigger markets, and from BBRV's last few
posts--it looks like they are going for the bigger markets.

:-)

Regards,
Targhan

Well, I've been developing one for ages, aswell... Just few weeks ago, started coding it on C. Had been coding it on Amos earlier. Well, that version sure works on MorphOS aswell, but native port is always better... And I guess, getting 24bit gfx from Amos isn't that easy...

Still quite early stage, just sorting out basic gfx routines. But what I have done untill now, seems to be working really well :)

Just if I had Pegasos to try it on... :)

Hi Jupp

I know that :-)
And it looks promising.

And you are right, native ports are better, I know that my stuff will run on MOS, well in theory..
I only program RTG and RTA stuff.... making it as compatible as possible.

this is the question i have asked so many times, and never got a answer to (where to buy mos)

anyway neither a full classic nor pegasos version is ready and both is far far away, i have seen em in action and i have tested one for
+2 hours , yes its alot nicer than a wb3.x (from 92->) but thats the least to expect.

but still, i dont see any product to sell here yet, i wouldnt pay for it unless its DONE and ready,
there is a reason why i am not a pcHead btw!.

anyway good luck, and i think we might be lucky if MOS and Os4 is ready after the summer 2003 , as thats when i get my tax money :)
Whats up with all the hate!
