PFS Defrag
« on: January 25, 2003, 04:15:04 AM »
one word HELP!

i went to aminet, and found several defraggers for pfs ,
guess what they work even, but i cant figure out the damn command lines.

the CP!_Pfs2defrag seems to be the only one that actually doesnt freeze,
but it tries to write the fragged stuff onto the locked disk,
and i am so stuck now..

why i want to defrag? , well because the disks are getting plain slow and well i like em to be abit faster.

can someone explain how to use this? , or suggest something?
i havent switched to SFS (on all disks yet due to the disks are big)

thanx in advance.

PFS tries to defrag files as they're written. Many times, rewriting a few
files once or twice is all it takes to defragment the drive. This is what
the defragmenters on Aminet try to do. They don't actually do anything other
than run DiskValid, parse the fragmented files out of the log file and then
start copying those files off and back onto the hard drive.

Greed stated that they were working on a REAL defrag program, one that would
defrag files using a more robust method, and would allow the drive to be
accessed while the defrag program was running, but that project is probably
long since dead.

If the drive is slowing down, you may have other types of errors related to
PFS that need attention. Diskvalid and PFSDoctor are fairly adept at getting
the drive squared away.
I sold my Amiga for a small fortune, but a part of my soul went with it.

In order to defragment, it will have to write onto
the disk. It should just copy the files to T: or
somewhere on your ram disk, and then back onto
the volume.

i am pretty sure i am doing this all wrong...arrgh...

now i tryed Diskvalid...look..

8.System39:> diskvalid games:
checking reserved tree
getting rootblock
checking disk Games
checking .deldir
checking anode tree
checking superblock 0
checking bitmap tree
checking bitmap indexblock 0
checking bitmap indexblock 1
checking bitmap indexblock 2
checking bitmap indexblock 3
checking bitmap indexblock 4
checking bitmap indexblock 5
checking bitmap indexblock 6
checking bitmap indexblock 7
checking bitmap indexblock 8
starting directory tree check
finished directory tree check
checking reserved bitmap
rootblock claims 113508 reserved blocks free
actual number of blocks free is 113507
checking main bitmap
checking anode bitmap
encountered 1 errors

and guess what... now it says PLEASE INSERT GAMES: heh , same stuff here also...
is my setup @%^$#^ ?? (its a real a1260/66/240ppc with os3.9bb2 btw)

is there any way of dooing this?? , the disk work fine, but its dead slow (infact all disks are)
and i kinda wanted to see where the damn error was..

You're not doing anything wrong per se, these
things can just be a real pain in the a** sometimes.
;)
Interesting. Hmmmm.....Make sure that your device
names and volume names are different, that can
cause some problems under PFS3 (such as the "please
insert games:" problem at the end of validation).
Also, are you using the regular or direct - scsi
version of PFS3? If you're using the internal IDE
of the A1200, I would reccomend using the direct -
scsi version, especially with a big hard drive. Just
be careful not to accidentally alter any other
paremeters in HD Toolbox while changing filesystems
or you can wipe the partition upon saving (or
changing to something other than PFS will probalby
wipe it as well).

Also, you may have a bad block on the hard drive....
if so, you should be able to map it out to prevent
future errors.

After you get everything sorted out, make sure to
give your PFS3 partitions each a couple of hundred
buffers for the best speed...and also make sure
your filesystem blocksize is 1024k for PFS3, no
more no less...sorry if you already know these
things...:)

OK, you seem to have problems...

this worked for me...(but a bit of a doggy way of doing it)
My tip is to forget that, boot from an emergency partition( you  have one?)/ or floppy; and make room on another HD...
Then copy (drag and drop) the entire partition you want to defrag in to the empty space (on another HD).

Delete the contents of the partition you want to defrag ( do you want to do this!?)
Then copy it back...

All the files are nicely arranged in continuous blocks...

Whoops almost forgot, make sure all the files are not protected etc...
(last resort) :-o
Anyone have any othere ideas?

Yup, I would definately try what blobrana said
first before getting all crazy with it. :)
Especially if it was working well until
recently.

thanx for all the good advice , but there was one that helped me ALOT infact it now works...

i had Volume: Games: name: Games:

now i will try (just tried disk valid) to defrag,

and i know about that copy over thingy (ofcourse) but the reason why i havent done it yet is because of the actual size of the disk and
i wanted to seek an easier option, oh and i aint too sure if the games would work afterwards and i wont install that again (alot of 1+ hour hyperion games etc....heh)

i will let u all know how it goes with cpdefrag later

thanx

now you have sorted it download this degrag utility
http://www.halsteadk.freeserve.co.uk/pfsdefrag/

also diskvalid needs to have the FIX option to repair files.

also it is worth mentioning that cache files from ibrowse , aweb and voyager may mention a error on some cache files it does fix them even though reports again, again and again.
The author of the above program reported this to me.
I would also use pfsdoctor which comes with pfs3, keeps the drive in good condition.
