A1200 Magic Pack/Classic Games Compatibility
« on: June 14, 2004, 08:42:01 AM »
Greetings from down under

I have the opportunity to purchase a relatively cheap, used A1200HDD from a neibour in Australia, specifically so i can transfer old classic adf's from my PC - moonstone wings of fury and many more!

I understand that some Escom A1200's have a compressed PC floppy drive that does not allow many old Amiga games to boot.

When questioned about this on the phone the owner stated the A1200 had 'floppy fix' installed .

Does anyone know anything about 'floppy fix' and whether it will overcome the floppy incompatibility problems.

I also understand there are incompatibilty problems resulting from a more advanced processer and chip ram. Can someone plase explain this to me in simple terms as i am quite 'technologically challenged'  :-?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the pro's cons of purchasing the A1200 and any suggestions on how i can overcome the compatibility limitations to play all my old favourites.

P.S. i have a working A500, so i guess once i have transferred adf;s to amiga disk using the A1200 i can play them on the 500 if i have to. But i would really like to be able to play them on the 1200 so i can lose the 500.

thanx heaps for any help/advice  :-)

I'll add a question on the same subject; is it possible to replace that "Escom" floppy with one from an old, broken Commodore (the floppy drive is not broken)? It should work fine, right?
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

OK here goes again :-)

If you get an Escom a1200 you will see that the FDD is not connected straight to the mobo. There is a small adaptor on the line, its shaped in a right angle and it allows the escom (panasonic) PC drive to connect to the amiga. The drive is also internally hacked, so no other PC drive will work.

This is the adaptor :

Anyway. If you remove the panasonic FDD and the adaptor, bingo! A standard amiga FDD now plugs into the motherboard. Or at least it worked when i connected my a500's Chinon drive to it.

Kev :-)

I replaced "escom" floppy-drive to old A500-internal drive many years ago, and haven't got any problems at all. :-)
