A4000 help!
« on: June 13, 2004, 02:01:46 AM »
Hi,

I've just opened up the 4000 I just bought, after getting paranoid hearing some peoples batteries have corroded and killed their Amiga's! I've got a Blue battery in mine, it says: Ni/Cd 3/v 60R 3.6V etc. Is this the one I want? I'm not sure if its new or not, but it looks like there's a bit of powder on the side of it. Can i just replace this by pulling it out and replacing it? If so do I want the same type? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers  :-)

Remove it ASAP!  It is leaking.  It will kill your RTC and SIMM slots if it hasn't already...  You can replace it with the new NiMh 3.6 volt types.  I got mine from eBay, they are drop in replacements.

You can carefully clip the legs to remove it for now, or the best way is to remove the MB and unsolder it from the underside.

Yep, it's definitely time to remove that battery. If you don't mind
your Amiga not keeping the correct time and date, you don't really
need to replace it with a new battery, but simply remove the old one
and you're all set.
;-) You will still be able to set correct time and date, if you really
wish, but after powering down the system, your settings will be lost.

I suppose if you wanna use that Amiga 4000 for some heavy expansion
and connecting to the internet as well, it may be worthwile to
actually install a new battery. Look for an Ni-mH type, as these
unlike Ni-Cd do not leak even after they are dead. :-)

Thanks for the ideas guys, I might take the battery out as I wouldn't know where to begin unsoldering from the other side!  :-o Could I just snap it off on the motherboard as it feels pretty loose? If I do this, then it should be fine until I eventually get it done properly, right?

Cheers,
jb

Ok, I've had a closer look at the battery and I've taken a picture but not sure where to upload it to, but anyway, it looks like the battery is being held in by an "arm" on each end. It looks as if the battery could be pulled up and out and replaced, but they seem to be attached, and rather flimsy, so I don't want to cut them if I don't have to..

Just cut it off with small sidecutters if you want, but it's usually better to desolder it properly if you can.

If you need information about removing/replacing RTC batteries, look here:

http://amiga.serveftp.net

Look in the battery replacement section.
