Surrounded by box, want more box, where put box
« on: June 12, 2004, 06:19:32 PM »
I'm surrounded by 6 machines some x86, some PPC, one 68k but no Amiga. I want to get an old A2k to put some of my zorro cards in, and I want a new Amiga but too many box = no space.

I hate boxage, too much boxage.

That is indeed a good idea.

What would be even better would be a big cupboard with a load of fans in it and a big hole for cables.

I sense some custom mainboard mounting systems, homemade backplanes, some creativity and a few hundred dollars could get you a very classy, wooden ( or steel, if you're VERY good ), home made 24u rack where you can put 6 4u machines in. Alternatively, if you're filthy rich, you could buy a 24 cabinet, complete with glass door and wheels. Very nice, very expensive, too.

Pretty shallow ( 18" ) 4u rackmount cases
24 and 42u cabinets, if you're feeling rich today...

I always wanted one big case which had 5 or 6 motherboards mounted vertically... all attached via ethernet doing parallel processing....with a few large fans to keep air moving and a bunch of cool glowing buttons and flashing status lights so it looks like a mini-WOPR from War Games...

hehehe

Well I'm not filthy rich, but I guess I could use my almost useless Technology A level and some cheepo wood from B&Q to construct some sort of monster box for boxes

What you need, is that Siamese case that was available some years back.
It could house some seven mainboards, some of them even Amiga formfactor....

I rebuilt an old server housing once to put three mainboards in it.

I bet if you look around on eBay you can find tons of old servers that can hold at least some of your boxes.

Did they ever actually ship any of those???  IIRC, they never got past the 'prototype' stages...  Or was that just the Siamese PCI?  Anyway, there were two versions, one for upto seven motherboards and antoher for just three.  Both, I believe, incl. special mounting plate (and backplane) for an A4000D and/or A4000T.  I thought they were pretty cool idea...    It's ashame they never took off.

@lorddef

I know the feeling of not enough space. Have two Amigas (68K and PPC) and two PC's at home... aswell as two Amigas (68K and PPC) and a PC at the clubhouse (also have a C64 and C128 there).

Had about 10 Amigas and 4 PC's at one time... Didn't realy have space for it all and my lady thought it was time to stop saving any more computers for a while. Sold quite a few computers lately to finance IRL stuff so there is starting to get room for one or two more computers now (don't tell her that). ;)

An A2000 can be yours for little or nothing at all if you keep your eyes open but I suggest you try get hold of an A4000 instead. Cost a little more though can be found for less than you think if you keep your eyes open and it will bring you alot more happienes in the end. :)
