Best place to put an 2.5inch HDD in an A500
« on: June 09, 2004, 03:26:21 PM »
Just aquired M-tec's megabody IDE interface and a 1.3gig Toshiba HDD but have no experience in placing internal HDD's in good old A500's so I wonder if anyone here can give some hints/good solutions.

Easy question. If you have kickstart 2.0 or higher(3.1( then use HDtoolbox to prepare the harddisc to install an OS and use the OS floppies to install the harddisc, no problem ...

Hmm, I don't think he means how to prep the disk, but where to actually place the hdd inside the A500 cabinet.

@AMIGAZ
If you remove the metal shield covering the motherboard, I think you should be able to place the hdd on top of the chips, but place the harddrive on a piece of hard plastic so the hdd doesn't touch any of the motherboard components.

If you have a slimline floppy drive in the A500 you could also place the hdd under the floppy, but you most likely have one of the big sized floppy drives. It could be changed though.

@AMIGAZ

I would say any position you can attach the drive to. IIRC A500 is quite spacey so the drive should fit easily.

Perhaps drill some holes to metal shielding and attach the drive there?

When positioning the drive, remember to check the cable length. Would be a bit silly to mount the drive only to find out the cable is slightly too short then... :)

Thanks for the advices!
My only prob now is that my IDE cable is only about 15cm long  :laughing:
Guess I have to put a longer one together by my own if they aren't sold in any store.
The HDD I have is the slimline model so it should fit inside somewhere.

 Dude you are lucky to have an internal HD for your A500. I myself am looking for one just for the purpose of being able to record Digitized animation from My Amiga LIVE! into an HD.  Since the LIVE takes up the Amiga's external expansion where harddrives are usually plugged, Im left with floppy only. So I need an internal HD and internal accelerator and RAM as well.
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...
