Guru 80000004

Does any one know the Guru 80000004 is?
I am trying to pin point a software error.
I have 2 HD one for OS3.9 this is where I have all the Mediator files and updates.

And another I am using for trial purposes.  It did have Wokbench 3.1 on and it ran without any problem what so ever.
So I copied the Workbench 3.1 into the second partion Work so its safe.
Then I installed OS3.9 over WB 3.1 now all I get is Guru 80000004 all the time when I click on any program.
This all started when I got an Apollo MkIII accelerator.
But my Amiga tells me its software related.
To get either HD I turn the Amiga off then plug in the IDE lead to the appropriate HD to use to see what is going on.
It does seem that If I use Workbench 3.1 as is then all is well but if I install OS3.9 then no way will the Apollo run properly (I have pin pointed it to this)
While I am runnig WB3.1 the Mediator and PCI card are there conected but with no drivers or updates.

Any ideas on this?

a guess is that it`s a incorrect (or missing) 040 library (in libs: drawer)

error 80000004 (DEADEND) is caused by an Illegal instruction

Hum, did you get a software disk with the accellerator?

Weren`t the MkIII Apollos 030 only?

I used to have an old MkIII Turbo, had the same problem.
Sometimes reseating the memory would cure it for a while,sometimes I had to just turn it off for a bit.

One thing I do remember, it crashed a lot more when it had the data caches enabled.

(er, im not really sure about that one) i must have been thinking about a card similar to my Apollo 040 (magum or CyberStorm MKIII?)...

So if the card has a 030 processor then  no software is needed...

(so remove the 040 library...)

From what I have heard and read both on the web and in news groups, the Apollo boards were very tempermental and there were many problems with them from a design standpoint that caused hardware issues for many people.

This is a CPU trap in which the CPU reports an error back to intuition, in this case, it's a blanket "illegal instruction" which could mean many different things, but, since that's an Apollo, I would make the assumption that there is a hardware issue. You might try reseating the device and any surface mount chips on the device and memory as well. Could be dirty pins causing erradic signals as well. I often clean pins (gently) and edge connectors with alcohol and a pencil eraser respectively.

This is most strange because I have got a second HD that has WB3.1 installed and nothing esle (apart from Mediator files and updates) this works fine with my Apollo, Voodoo 3 card perfect, BUT if I use the first HD with OS3.9 and all Mediator files and updates then WOW trouble resets all sorts I get.
I cant even open the Prefs Picasso96Mode to set the Voodoo card it just resets and thats as far as I can get with it.
So I am thinking some where in the OS3.9 there is a gremlin that just dont like the Apollo.
But I just dont know what?

Sounds like the problem is from accessing one of the drives, not from the OS or any other programs. Make sure MaxTransfer and DMA-mask are set correctly in hdtoolbox for the hdd that crashes your system. My SCSI hdd from my 1200 was unstable in my 4000T until I set the above mentioned parameters back to normal.

It could also be you are using some sort of file-system that doesn't work very well with a '030. If it is something other than OFS/FFS, it may be optimized for a specific processor.

sorry to dig this one up, I have a similar problem but with 060 card in A4000. also sometimes there's a flash of blue screen (custom chips bad). usually it gives guru 80000004. I've tried reseating cpu card and it sometime seems to make a difference. also, i used a lot of contact cleaner spray on power connector, hope that didn't break something.
 what could it be?

are 040 libs and patches absolutely neccessary? because, sometime it booted OK without them.

If you're running an 060, having the replacement library is necessary. You might also want to look into OxyPatcher.

Other than that, make sure all your contacts are clean on anything that is socketed, not just the PSU.

its a complete disaster; several capacitors have leaked 'burning' surrounding traces and components.
also when I replaced batt many years ago, I probably used soda and some white fluffy stuff has now 'grown' around where batt used to be.

it sat in closet for many years, I should have checked caps. d-oh
