Can downloaded games be used on an Amiga?
« on: May 31, 2004, 07:52:37 PM »
Hi Every1,
I have just brought an Amiga A500+ I have a game I wanted to play on it but the disk is corrupted. I've found a download of the same game on the web, but the game is a ADF file? Can this download be used with my Amiga? And also how do I put the file on a disk? does it need any booting software on the disk as well?

Many Thanks

Hoya!

You need a specific adf-to-disc programme that you can find on Aminet for example. Do a search there.

Although ADF has been created for Ammy emulators on peecees, it is now used as a convenient archival system on Amiga :-)

Thanks mate. How do I get onto Aminet, and what is the programme called? And because I'm stupid how does it work? Also one last question about Amiga games. If the download is 1mb and should be on 2 or more disks, how would I span them across the disks after downloading the file.

Many Thanks

I wonder if it's possible or even practical to unarchive an adf to a ramdisk.

yes its perfectly possible, any A1200 should do it easily with the standard 2 meg chip RAM, i mean after all you can only get much less than 2 meg on a floppy, although it might be wise to use a basic workbench setup (i.e. no backdrop or background utilities running)

IIRC workbench  without anything added uses up around 500k when booting from a hard disk, leaving you just enough memory to dump a disk into the RAM

marvellous how the amiga manages RAM  :-)

Ah yes Amiga Sneakernet:

Get ADF2Disk from Aminet, works great.  Even has a GUI for WB.

Just download the .zip archive, store on a 720k PC disk. (for larger zips you may need to span them.  I usually use the split/join commands on the zip and transfer, yes a pain.  But now I have a Amiga on my network so don't need to do this anymore) Then you will need to read this disk on the Amiga.  You will need CrossDOS or AmigaDOS 2.x +.  Mount PC0: then copy or unzip the .zip to RAM: or a HD. (Note 1MB RAM or more is needed, or a HD)  Once the ADF is unzipped use ADF2Disk or similar to copy the image to a real disk!  Good luck.

I have read the file on ADF's. Surely if I just put the ADF of a game onto a disk (Does it matter what kind I use?)The ADF files of the game should then run, correct? It does sound like a bit of a hassle to muck about with all these cables, and what not!

Yes, if you write it out to the disk, that's it.. Merely copying the file is not enough (and it wouldn't fit anyway), since the ADF is the entire disk's contents, not just what the filesystem represents when you dir it.

You will need some way of writing it to the disk, and for that you need a real Amiga with some way of transferring the ADF over there, or a Catweasel board in your PC.

Would it be possible to store some of the ADF files on a PC floppy (which are 1.44mb), then store them in memory. Then run the program on the Amiga to un-archive the files, then return the file/s to a disk? And where can I get a 720 kb floppy disk?
P.S. the Amiga I have brought is an Amiga A500+ with 2MB in total, do you think that is enough memory?
P.P.S. How in god's name do I transfer the Aminet programs to my Amiga (Null modem cable?)

Many Thanks

@Specs78

are you in the UK?
if so try this site for some blank DD disks (packaged as new I believe):

Thanks Speelgoedmannetje,
Would it be possible to list everything I will need to transfer a ADF "image" of a game, from a PC, then onto the Amiga, then onto a Disk? BTW I will be getting Workbench 2.1 with the Amiga.

Many, Many Thanks
