OS 3.5 under WinUAE
« on: May 29, 2004, 04:19:18 PM »
I've finally managed to get hold of an OS 3.5 CD.
As i recently formatted my harddrive, I am installing 3.5 from scratch.
When I boot from the 3.1 floppy, and try to run the PRE-install, I'm prompted for a volume called "OS3.5".
Anyone who knows what I'm doing wrong?

I'm too lazy to install CDROM-support, so I simply mounted the entire CD as a hard drive. Stupid?

Possibly, yes :-)

I can't remember that much about installing 3.5, but I do remember that you have to boot from the partition you want to install it on.

Tried 'assign OS3.5:' to where the install disc is?

You need 3.1 installed on your main hard drive partition before 3.5 installs.  You don't need to have booted from it.

If you boot from a 3.5 'emergency disk' you can install the tweaked 3.1 from the CD, then 3.5, then CD support.  Assigning the CD as a read only hard disk will work fine, but once 3.5 is installed it's worth sorting the proper CD support if you want to use CDs regularly!

Out of interest does 3.9 need the same treatment?  I'm ripe for an upgrade from 3.5! (on the real Amiga that is ;-))

If you have a lot of probs and you're on broadband your're welcome to my old 3.5 hdf install, it'd probably need a bit of playing about with to get it set up as you want as I use 3.9 now, but if you want a copy of it give us a shout.

I have tried unsuccessfully to install OS3.9 from the original CD on WinUAE.

I currently have OS3.1 (AIAB)

I wouldn't mind some tips on getting 3.9 working. The guides I have seen so far don't seem to help me much on my current setup.

To confirm a previous post, you need to install 3.1 first, boot from the HD and then run the install for OS3.5.

All I did was copy my 3.5 hdf and then do an upgrade on the copy of 3.5, I had no problems at all, what problems are you having?

Just thought, whabang, make sure you name the 3.5 disk OS3.5 or whatever when you mount it as a hard disk and it should be okay.

It should pick up the volume name from the CD, shouldn't it?  I'm sure I called mine 'CD0' in UAE when I installed it :-?
