VGA switchboxes
« on: May 28, 2004, 07:40:31 PM »
Are there any VGA switchboxes that actually do a good job of switching displays between your GFX card and ScanDoubler, without any loss of picture quality? I suppose that those expensive ones are the ones to look for.

I have a cheapish ($10-$20 range) switchbox, and I can clearly notice that the display coming out of Voodoo 3 is not as good as it would be if it were directly hooked up to the monitor. I don't notice any big difference with the ScanDoubler display, but the high res RTG Voodoo 3 output looks terrible (kind of blury). The extension cables coming out of the GFX card and ScanDoubler to the VGA switchbox are both of good quality (StarTech make), so I doubt that this is the problem.

So your switchbox is a passive (not active) device?  IOW, does it not need a pwr xformer?.  If so, thats about as good as it gets without shorter cables I believe.  YMMV

There's no power connectors on it. It's only a 4 way (A, B, C, and D) VGA switchbox. I guess it is passive then.

Does an active one produce better results?

I would recommend an electronic switch like one of those

I actualle have two of the 4-way versions and am very sattisfied. All right they aren`t cheap, but well worth the money. I don`t know if they sell nternational, as they only have german pages.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

Yeah, I use the Belkin 4-way PC console switches at work, they're fine (powered).  The PS/2 switch part has broken on them all, but the VGA works fine :-)
