CyberVision64 GFX card question
« on: May 28, 2004, 04:54:39 AM »
I have a CV64 GFX card with 2 megs ram installed.
The box that it came in says there is a 2meg and
a 4 meg version.
The card has 8 ram chips (256k chips) for a total
of 2 megs. Now 4 of the chips are serface mounted
and 4 chips are socketed.
I'm not going to attempt to remove the serface mounted
chips but the socketed chips can be changed easily.

The question is if I install 512k chips in the sockets
will I have 3 megs of usable ram?
And will this work at all ??

Are you sure about the Size of the chips or are you just assumeing it  ? When the sockets are filled you should have 4MB. The 2MB Version has empty sockets.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

@melott:

Yeah, I agree with Lemmink. The 2MB version of the card has empty sockets and the 4MB version has the sockets filled. This is the case with my CyberVision64 and all other CyberVision64s I have heard of. It does sound like you already have a 4MB card.

Hi

yes if you have all the chips, you have 4 MB of videoram.

If you are using P96 (the better choise for CV64 IMHO), launch AvailP96 and you will see, the amount of VRam.

Ditto.  It was a cheap & easy upgrade back in the mid '90s, and many S3 based PCI & early AGP cards had the same sockets.

Hmmm..... This card was new in box when I got it.
The box says its a 2 meg card, Dopus says its a 2 meg
card, and I did a search on the chip numbers and they
are 256k chips.
There are 8 chips total so that makes it 2 megs.
This seems odd......... (this card was new)

So the question is still,... can I upgrade 4 of the
chips and get 3 megs ram?
Will it reconize 3 megs or does it need to be 4 megs??

listen to me . . . .the 2 MB showed by dopus, are CHIP ram.

Dopus isn't be able to see the GFX mem on the GFX card.

The only way (if you are on P96) is download AvailP96.

Your card has already 4 MB of videoram.

@mellot:

The size you found when searching for the chip-numbers doesnt happen to be of the size 256Kx16bits which equals to 512KiloByte?

This should be the case as the width of the Trio64 datapath is 64-bit and for the minimum 2MB configuration with 4 chips, the chips would have to have a 16-bit wide datapath each to give a 64-bit width when combined (4 * 16 = 64).

What are the resolutions the card can handle? If it can do let's say 1024x768 @ 24 bit non-interlace, then I would bet it is a 4 meg one.
Anyway is the only way

@Patrik

Yes the chips are 256x16.
These are the chips 'HY514260B'

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.
Can you put it so a dummy (me) can understand??

And with P96 I can display 1024x768 24bit mode.

     Hi Mell, I've got a CV64-3D with 4 megs, NEC Multisync FE700 monitor and 1024x768 24 bit looks a little funky on my machine.  No trouble at all using 1024x768 16 bit.  Best regards...Art

 256x16 isn`t a 256Kb chip, it`s 512Kb.
 (256*1024*16 means the chip is 4Mbit, and since 1 byte= 8 bits, 4Mbit/8 =512Kbyte)

 So if you have 8 of these installed, you have the full 4Mbytes.
Hope this helps clear up the confusion.
On schedule, and suing

Thanks .........

Yes it clears it up.
The card performs great, just thought if it had more to
offer I should upgrade it and get it all.

I have the 4MB Version too. (Funky in 1024x768 24Bit) that's right.. Is there a way to come around that ?
I also use 16 Bit Mode all the time. Somebody got a Monitor File with fully working 24 Bit Mode ? BTW I use CGX V4 latest Version..
