networkcard for A1200
« on: January 19, 2003, 06:20:06 PM »
Um, what PCMCIA network cards worked with an unexpanded A1200? and does one only need to buy the card or does it need more hardware to work?

Download the Cnet device archive from Aminet, and check the compatibilty list..
There`s also a fairly new driver for *some* 3Com cards on Aminet.

Apart from that, you`ll need the PCMCIA reset patch from Aminet (or follow the instructions in the cnet device archive, and do a H/ware patch instead).

When you say "unexpanded A1200", do you mean as in 2Mb Chip RAM, no fast mem, no HD ??
I`d at least get a hard drive..otherwise you`ll be in disk swapping hell !
Also, some extra memory and cpu power would certainly help speed up the network..(the PCMCIA port speed is dependant on CPU power).

It`s possible to get an A1200 networked just using a floppy, but it wouldn`t be pleasant to use.
On schedule, and suing

You also need a TCP stack like genesis or miami..
Posted a thread about this a while ago, search for PCMIA.. maybe it'll show up
It's called "PCMIA network - OS3.5" or similar

If you have some simple files to swap, and a PC get a serial link instead. It's slow, but it's cheap and works with less software if i'm not mistaken...
You must get a special cable due to some differences in port-pins, but any dealer will supply it.

Again check out the threads, there's been enough threads about transfers in emulation/hardware/software sections.

My advice would be to look for the most generic, simplest-looking  and cheapest PCMCIA NIC you can find :-)

Mine's a Dynamode, works nicely, although PCMCIA throughput is really awful, expect 200KB/sec absolute maximum.

@mikeymike

Just for inquiry, what's your software set-up with it?

Mine is an Ovislink 10Mb, and works flawlessly.

What do you guys think is a reasonable download
speed with a DSL account on a 1200 via PCMCIA?
The max I've been able to download is about
45,000 cps tops, which seems to translate to
about 40kb/sec or so....this seems a bit weak,
but I know of no other 1200's to compare it
to. I have a feeling that the port is slower
than the connection.

BTW: As to the original topic, I'm using an old
Edimax, works excellent.

I have a USR PCMCIA card that works now that some new driver came out a few weeks ago for it on Aminet. I've tested it and it works great. AFAIK only 10Mb cards work. If you want it make me an offer.

Strange. I use a TrendNet 210CT with miami and cnet.device and I get around 800kb/s. Still, it's not the full 10Mbit/s bandwidth.  :-(

Well that depends on the DSL speed, obviously.

I get around 1800000 bps with my 2mbps cable.
The traffic is routed by a linux boxen though (and yes, the linux box gets the same ~1800000 bps).

[edit: bps not cps.. ugh]

Thanks for the info, Piru. I thought that perhaps
the PCMCIA port could only handle so much,
but aparrantly it can handle much more than
40,000 cps! Hmmm....thanks again indeed, I
may have to place a call to my ISP.  ;)

I have an old 10Base-t / 14.4 modem PCMCIA card, its made by Megerhertz (called the em1144t or something), it works okay with Linux, haven't tried with Aos, you think it would work?

I don't have my amiga with me, but next time I go to my parents house I'm gonna have a play, see If it will work with my miggy. :-D

I have arranged to send Desolator a PCMCIA setup that I know works. I used it until I got PCI and a 10/100 PCI nic. Thanks everyone for supporting each other!!!

@ -d-

I have a 512kbps down & 256kbps up ADSL line, and I get anything between 50kbps to 180kbps down it through my router to any of the PC's on my network, which is about right, with the usual speed being 60kbps ish.

With ADSL the bandwith you subscribe for has a contention ratio, the ration is 50:1 for my pipex bundle which means I share my 512kbps down & 256kbps up line with up to 50 other users, so if a lot of people in your area have ADSL (the most on your line would be 50) you would get about 50kbps.

Most packages are 50:1 (or 20:1 for business bundles) contention.
