A1200 upgrading, worth it ?
« on: May 27, 2004, 04:58:23 PM »
i'm thinking of buying a viper 68060 + 64 mb turbocard from vesalia.de, just to get some extra performance and because my trusty 1200 is worth it :-D

at the moment i have just a basic 1200 with 4mb extra fastmem + 260mb HDD

here's my question...

i'm using the 1200 mainly for playing games - what about compatibility ? will i run into many problems after installing this card ? i'm also playing many a500 only games by using TUDE degrader software

in general, does it make sense upgrading a 10 year old computer ?

i'm sure you guys can help me out :-)

I'd rather aim for a used or new BPPC, doesn't vesalia charge about 2-300euros for that Viper?

With bppc you would have chance of OS4, and still have perfect backward gaming compability.

and if you ask me, it makes sense to upgrade a1200 if you're nostalic about amigas...
BPPC 210/060, 256MB, ZIV + Mediator ZIV, Spider II, Voodoo 3, Terratech 512i, MAS Player PRO, Pixelview TV Pro, X-Surf II, Kickflash OS4, VARIO, SilverSurfer, Fast ATA ZIV, Int.SD/FF, Seagate Barracuda V 60GB, 12x CD/RW, 52X CD/R, Punchillos III, PSX-A...

Plain and simple: If you install an accelerator you will loose some compatability. The game companies made stuf for an A1200 that was stock, thas what they all expected people to have. When you start building up, things crash.

I would keep your A1200 stock, then use the money you plan to upgrade with to buy an AmigaOne or a Pegasos. With OS4 so close and MorphOS on release 1.4 you cant go wrong! My personal choice is a Pegasos II G4.

Well, I don't know if the Viper has that function, probably not, but with the Blizzards if you press 2 on bootup and keep it pressed, you'll completely disable the accelerator for bakcward compatibility. Many games, probably most that are worth it, also have a WHDLoad (program to install floppy games on HD)installer that most times get over compatibility issues with upgraded machines.

thanks for the quick replies !

building a new ppc computer would with OS4 would be great, but this will be way more expensive as i need a complete new system around it...

anyway, if there's a way to en-/disable the vipercard on booting, it would solve the compatibility problems :)

anyone familiar with the vipercards from vesalia ?

thanks again

Yes, I have the 060 version. Unfortunately the card cannot be disabled like the Blizzard. Good news is that it fits nicely in the original casing.

Install the games with WHDLoad and they will all (99.9%) work  :-D

get a PPC card for your A1200, hack it into the desktop case, patch like hell,, use WHDLoad and enjoy a 1992 computer... as a nifty machine in 2004  :-)
