Idefix Destroyed my Hard drive ????
« on: May 23, 2004, 06:14:33 AM »
ok, yesterday i got my new bppc + some more hw and i switched out my powerflyer some weeks back with an old idefix due to several reasons, i got abit shocked to see that my OLD BPPC was working but it was my damn HARDDRIVE that was acting up and my scsi stuff wasnt working (hence why i didnt test it any more while waiting for a new bppc).

anyway i managed to get my system running (os3.9 and os4) but after a few minutes the system got very unstable so i hooked up some more power to the bppc and i tried both my bppc's just to make sure, anyway the whole disk (2) got smacked by idefix adapter, or so it seems as SFS made heaps of errors making the drives not bootable anymore and then it hit me....AAAAAARGH

POwerflyer uses another id and max transfer etc compared to idefix and maybe thats it or? ..

worst case is that something else in my setup is dead but i doubt it and i will try my hw again later today (after work) .

any tips?   btw i changed back to powerflyer now and it didnt help but i guess that the damage is allready done to my boot disks.

I would think that the max transfer and id wouldn't matter too much. Those should be changable without destroying data (I've changed the max transfer on a drive before with no fuss.)

Seems more likely that something like this might happen if you're using the split-drive option without the powerflyer software. (Just a guess though)

Neither IDEfix nor Powerflyer destroy the other one's data. If you have the split option enabled with the Powerflyer, IDEfix only sees the first part of the drive, the other parts are left alone. Also a wrong MaxTransfer value does not cause read errors, it does cause corrupted files though. What do you mean by the "ID" value ?

IMHO there is something different wrong with your system. Probably related to HDD cables or power supply or heat.

To help you recovering your data, one has to know the status of the system. "Does not boot" is too weak, what does that mean ? Does it show the floppy disk animation or does it give an error requester like "no dos disk in dh0" or something like that ? Does the HDD spin up and initialise itself ? Are the partitions shown in the early-startup menu ? If you boot from floppy disk, does it show the partitions on the Workbench desktop ? Does it validate ? Is the HDD recognised by HDToolbox ? Does HDToolbox tell you the drive is not initialised ?

Bye,
Thomas

Hi,

if your are speaking about the ID of the filesystem, yes it MUST be the same.

I've just tryed an "experiment" about SFS.

All data was lost BUT . .  .if you retype manually, the old ID, all the data comes back.

Ciao

thomas: what happens is that it booted fine the first times, but then screen trash appeared (alot of grey and whit dots all over wb etc) , then more and more came (on BOTH ppc's) then all of a sudden heaps of crc errors appeared (on both ppc's) , i tried several simms and all acted same, tried with and without mediator and then BANG neither os4 nor 3.9 wanted to boot anymore, i just get a black screen when booting (hdd starts and does 1 reboot and it hangs due to errors (CRC) .

i can load wb if i type only that (after i assign) and i see all partisions and drives with both idefix and powerflyer , i tried 2 diff mobo's aswell (i used all of yesterday on this) .

so my plan now is to go to a friends house and make him copy my scsi drive over to an newly formatted ide drive and see if it helps since i dont use scsi atm.

i need all the help i can get as its really upsetting.

cheers

The HDD is not your problem. As I said before your computer has a serious hardware problem, probably caused by heat. Perhaps a loose contact between the accelerator and the mother board. If your HDD is corrupted it is because you ran it too long with the error condition, not because the HDD is bad.

DiskSalv or XXX-Salv where XXX is your file system (e.g. PFS or SFS) might be of help, but run it on a good computer, not on this one.

Thomas

well the weird part is that its ok now...

all i did was , changed the hdd's out and removed some hw so that the psu wouldnt be under too much strain and i installed an old backup of my os and bang...it was up...

i tried to write to the other hdd's and format etc...rW errors all over the place.

the thing that made it all {bleep}ed up it seems is either 1. idefix , 2. powerflyer , 3.hdtoolbox from install3.0 floppy , 4. my kinda luck..

both ppc's work fine , tried em with some games and demos last night and the os fly now, now gfx trash either.

i reflashed both cards (ppc) that might have been it but tbh i did too many things at the same time so ... :-)

that said, my amiga was turned on from 20:00 till 00:00 last night, was some minor crashes but thqats because of my old backup and heaps of assigns etc redirected to ram: :-)

i also tried 3 sets of simms untill it got abit better but sad part is that i dont know for sure if it was ppc, simms,os,hdd's etc but messing about did help.

also i scraped the accelerator connector with a knife + powered the ppc card directly + on the mobo + from mediator as a test and its hard (yet again) to say what fixed everything but!!! i removed the power cord to the mobo (from psu) and it was fine after that so...

thanx for your help so far and i would love to know what happened to my system..

cheers
