E-mail progs
« on: May 18, 2004, 10:10:50 PM »
Hello gents/1 or 2 ladies,

I'm wondering what e-mail software peeps use.  A few months ago I started using my Amiga as my primary computer for most things apart from interweb stuff.  Recently bought IBrowse which is surprisingly impressive - certainly usable on an 25mhz 040 (I hear giggles in the back from those with 060s or PPCs; quiet!).  Anyway, the next step is to transfer my e-mail accounts to Amiga.  I have tried with one such on the Amiga Mail prog included with 3.9 but lots of probs with receiving attachments.  Seem to be there, save, but turns out to be a filename for a file sized 0 bytes! - not good.  Sends everything fine, though.

So, if anyone could recommend good e-mail software, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Oh god help us, a Skittyhorpe Utd fan  :-(  :-P  :-D I work with two, and one played for the 'Iron Filings' amateur team.  It's enough to drive a (non-football fan) man insane, lol.

Have you looked on Aminet?  I thought I heard 'Pine' mentioned by someone else, if it's anything like the unix version it's a nice basic package.

I would strongly recommend YAM (Yet Another Mailer).

It's available from Aminet and is well supported by other developers/icon creators, etc. Some say YAM is the best emailer on any platform.

Cheers,

JaXanim is right. YAM is incredibly cool. Very simple yet powerful. It stands out as one of the best Amiga software out there.

Forget the e-mail client included with OS 3.9 - it's crap.

Basically, there are two choices:

The legendary YAM.

And then there is SimpleMail, which is quite new, but under constant development. I didn't test it yet, but it's said to be as good as YAM.

@Holley

No, no, I am a West Ham man (they got through to play-off finals tonight); close, though!

@all

Is YAM still supported? Do I need to/will I still be able to register?

Cheers.

P.S.  I can't get smilies to work (using IBrowse).  Any hints?

Interesting, the colours look the same and Skittyhorpe Utd's badge features the word 'iron' ... you learn something new every day :-)

@Holley

You're right - the colours are the same too.  An old flatmate was a Scunny fan and used to try and convince me that, on those grounds, I was duty-bound to follow Skittyhorpe United too!

You wont have to register theyre both free (Yam & Simplemail) ive used Yam since i moved away from Thor (a great piece of software once) but recently ive moved from Yam to Simplemail because that one is more stable (at least on my Pegasos).

Hi Guys,

Just to say thanks to those who recommended YAM.  Downloaded, installed, working in no time and very professional looking.  It seems very impressive.  Couple of freezing windows but I haven't taken time to configure it fully yet.  Sure these will be ironed out.  What a difference, though!

Cheers.

Yup, YAM and SimpleMail are the defacto email programs for the Amiga.  One of the main features I love about them is the lack of rendering HTML email messages.  I hope that never changes.

Damn html email messages.

That sounds like a Scunny fan alright!

I can't stand HTML in emails either, but most people like to 'prettify' it, even if it does make each message over 10k instead of 1!

100% agreed with no HTML in messages being a plus! :-)
