Workbench wont boot
« on: May 15, 2004, 01:07:14 AM »
I just installed a copy of Workbench 3.0 onto a bootable enabled drive parition. When I reboot the machine, all I get is the command interface, no workbench screen.

What do I need to do to fix this?

Ah cool, thanks :)

How can I make the Amiga boot into Workbench automatically each time I power on, skipping the command interface bit?

sounds like your s/startup-sequence file is damaged or missing. This file sets up the system stuff then calls loadwb itself.

Try doing

list s:

at the command prompt. Do you see startup-sequence in there?

If not, your installation was incomplete or messed up. If so, it probably fails somewhere before before it gets to the loadwb command.

I'd need to see it before I can tell you more :-/

Why would you want to do that?

I would imagine that you could put loadwb into the startup-sequence or user-startup file (it's probably best to do the latter).  You may also need an endcli after doing loadwb (at least that is how 2.04 is setup).

Yeah, the startup sequence file isn't there :\ The installation seemed to go fine...I'll install it again and see if it works.

Thanks :) I might have to get back to you again if I can't get this to work. I'm still a huge newbie.

The point is, loadwb is supposed to be in the startup-sequence already. It's usually the last command before endcli.

If he has to add these manually there is somethign wrong with the existing file, perhaps more than just this.

A correct 2.x/3.x startup-sequence generally does the following essential tasks (amongst others):

creates folders in RAM: for temp files, clipboard and enviromnent
copies the environment archive to the one in RAM:
makes all the default system assigns and paths
invokes the monitor drivers, dosdrivers etc.
invokes the user preferences
attempts to execute any user-startup file
loads the workbench
ends the boot shell

It's an A1200, put a new 527 hard drive in it, and it has some ram expansion addon...not sure how much ram though.

Do I need to change any boot priority settings, or is all I need to do make the first partition bootable?

I have a tekmagic 060 in my A2000 and I had to sequentialy add ram and use a smaller hard drive to format the bigger one until the larger was all set, then did an emergency boot disk to back up big one. If a stock Amiga 1200, and you install OS, it should just run to workbench screen. Try  to boot up w/o hard drive....if you get kickstart screen and can boot via disks, drive maybe too big?

I think OS3.0 should have no problem with a drive that size..I think it has a max limit of 2gigs. Yep, Workbench will load properly when I type loadwb, but I dont get the Ram mount.
